Importing car as a resto project or complete???
I own a 85 Ford Escort RS turbo Series 1, the shell has been fully restored, ready for paint so in the new year i can start to rebuild the car. I have a few of questions if anyone can help me, so here goes.......
Is it possible to ship it over as parts along with a rolling shell and docs, has anyone done anything similar? Pros and Cons of this method?
If i rebuild in the uk, whats involved reguarding duties, i've owned the car 6 years but its been off the road since 2007?
Is the mk3 escort exempt from NZ impact regs?
any info appreciated
Cheers
Paul

Sorry, can't help but if you get an answer, I'd be interested as I have a 1937 Scott Flying Squirrel, in bits, in the UK and I want it here!

Re: Importing car as a resto project or complete???
Hi Paul,
I asked a while back about my Triumph Stag and also from my web searches I came to the conclusion that the car has to be imported as a fully working vehicle which can be tested and approved by a compliance centre, or you are allowed to bring in car parts as spares, but not allowed to build up a vehicle entirely from the collection of bits you import, or you can bring in a car for spares, but again not allowed to register it. Of course, it might be possible to buy a really knackered registered NZ car and and use nearly all of your good bits to restore it I've no idea how or if that would work though.
From what I read (NZTA and Customs websites) it is possible to bring in a car as an 'immigrant's vehicle' which exempts it from a lot of the homologation requirements, but you can't sell the car for a certain length of time (4 years IIRC). There is also the possibility of importing as a special interest/historic interest vehicle, the requirements are on the NZTA factsheet (no.44??).
Hope this helps,
John.

Re: Importing car as a resto project or complete???
From other forums I know of a couple of mk3 Escort ex BTCC cars that are in NZ, apparently one is still raced and recently had a re-shell. The shell was shipped from the uk so i'll have to see regarding it going as a unfinished resto project.
Thanks

Thanks for the information, at least I now know to crack on and get it finished, to be honest I think its best i get it done over here but i thought it might have been an option.
I did look briefly into the historic/interest vehicle section, think that it allows exemptions with certain criteria such as emissions and frontal impact, I'll look further into it and find out.
Cheers

Hahahaha yep all for an ford escort or esky as kiwi's call em. Owned this since i was 19 and its the only car thats never depriciated.... mint examples are fetching around £10k now and a fare few are being restored. The only one down under is in Oz and i believe it sold for over Aus$20K not that id be importing to sell. Just enjoy the RS scene, had positive feedback on kiwi ford forums, plus the S1 is great to drive.
