How do NZ Supermarkets compare to Australia, USA and rest of the World?

PS Supermarkets are not super at all here. They're like the Co op used to be about 40 years ago. They're crap - their veg is overpriced and unfresh. It's pants, sorry.

However, meateaters can relax, the choice is good, the quality great and the price is very cheap vs UK. Esp great - lamb. Beef also great. Pork and chicken - nothing to write home about.

I do think the kiwis need to get a grip of all the sugar in their food though and the colourings in some things are shocking!!!

Hi guys I'm new here, I'm a Brit married to an American who has lived in small town USA for the last 15 yrs. All I can say is that those pics of the NZ supermarkets put everything that we have here to shame. I can't wait to get over there, everything looks so good & fresh. Anyone fancy any limp overwaxed veggies!!!! that taste of nothing. I recently went back home to the UK & was amazed at the variety in Asda, but does anyone cook from scratch back there?
As for thinking the kiwi food is loaded with sugar, you need to taste the stuff here. :scared:

I'm nr. Hamilton. I wonder if the south island has better veggies. I was apple picking last summer and I can say that all the best was for export but that doesn't mean it will be fresh when it hits Tesco's. No siree Bob! (hee hee) It will be put in a chiller for months on end. I'm talking about Countdown in particular - not consistently good and overpriced. New World must have better buyers but it's still a badly priced most times. I find it better to go to the veggie shops but you still have to watch them. I've found one good one that's consistent and okay quality. The veggies shops are cheaper but not necessarily any good.
We're getting our own stuff in the gruond soon.

Nothing like the taste of a freshly picked apple is there, absolutely fantastic. I think in comparrison the veggie shops apples were quite good, still getting the kids used to certain stuff not being in season therefore they cannot just have on a whim.
Some one once told me about square foot gardening and I plan to do that this year in our garden, as well as getting some fruit trees planted up against the fences etc.

Tango is a powdered drink I remember being mixed with water.....neither pop or soda. Ghastly coloured & revolting tasting too & Im amazed its still being sold there. Pop (also called that here in the US) to me is a carbonated drink.

Wow someone who agrees with my views on American food. Cant believe they dont have fruit & veges shops here either. I find the best place to buy decent fruit & veges is from the markets but in the area I live (mid west) they only have them during the summer months
Its also uncommon to see people here cooking from scratch but its a habit I refuse to give up. When I first arrived here I was horrified at the number of females who cant cook at all:scared: & as for the content of the sugar in the food here it makes Kiwi food look almost sugar free.

I wouldn't drink 'ghastly' powdered drinks or feed to my children either ... god only knows what nasty preservatives they would have in them over here!
Long time since I bought the stuff but I seem to remember Tango as been orange pop, a horrible vile colour it is too over here.
Not going to try to explain any more.
You should go find a NZ expat board
