Hi all,

I'm in Adelaide, having just arrived last year so please forgive my lack of knowledge about NZ.

I would really like to visit NZ to see the locations used in the Lord of the Rings movies but don't know where to find any info or even whether it's possible to do such a tour.

I've picked up a couple of brochures on NZ from a travel agent but only found a couple of day/half day tours from a couple of places.

Is this all that's available or have I picked up the wrong brochures?

I know the locations are spread out around both islands but hoped there would be a tour that takes in most of them, lasting a week or more.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction or put me straight?

What we did was buy the extended version of the 1st lord of the rings and it showed where certain areas were filmed. so I recommend this. We then decided to goto these places on our own steam. Hiring a car is dead cheap (we spent a month in NZ).

The one that stuck in our mind was Mata Mata, this was where Hobbiton was filmed and the hobbit holes are still there. Its about $50 each for the tour but we loved it.

So my advice watch the Lord of the rings extended version and buy a copy of the Lonely Planet (this will have some info on LOTR), also do it under your own steam, more fun and cheaper too.

You could do with having longer than a week. We just had 7 weeks holiday in NZ and did both the north and south islands, we travelled by car and stayed in various accomodation. If it's scenery you want then stick to the south.. there's just no competion in my opinion..
