Halswell is a nice place, crime would be fairly low. Shopping is basic in Halswell village there are shops for everyday stuff like a newspaper shop. Local supermarket in not too far away.

Re: Help with Halswell
Halswell is effectively a suburb of Christchurch, just on one edge. Once upon a time it was separate, but the edges have joined together. Mix of brand new subdivisions and older established houses.
Fine for renting, you will need a car fairly quickly, there are buses into town but the bus service runs mostly on a spokes of a wheel system, so you can get into town easily, but not to the rest of the city...
Schools and shops, no problems, edge of city so easy to head out of town for weekends. Beach is a way away, but there is easy access to Port Hills and Lyttleton Harbour for walks etc.
