Hello! Want to head to NZ for sure!
Hello everyone
I'm kaz and i'm 24 from the UK. I am an archivist and i'm unsure if this is still on the skills shortage list. I aim to apply for archivist or records manager/assistant vacancies.
Also i'm not sure how best to apply. I have a Masters Degree from the UK and 2 and a half years work experience. I dont think i get 100 points at the moment for some reason
When is the best time to apply? Should i only apply if i have a job offer? Would an employer wait 6 months or so for the visa process to complete?
On the NZ immigration site what does the Comparable Labour Market mean? Would my UK experience get me some extra points?
What is the quickest time one can become a resident in NZ? I have read people on this forum were able to achieve this aim within a year, is that possible?
Sorry to bombard you with so many questions straight away
I'm sure i'll have many more to come
Regards
Kaz

Although this area is s'posed to be for intros, I'll try and get you started by trying to help with a couple of your queries. Best place to ask really is in the main forum coz there are more people there.
As far as I am aware Archivist is not on either of the shortages lists. It is seen as a skilled occupation though and quite right too.
55 of which are for your degree.
30 for your age
and 10 for the work experience.
Looking at your points which seem to be 95, you would only be able to apply under the Skilled Migrant Category, if you were to gain a job offer. This would be to bump up the points to over 100. a job offer also helps the application.
As you mentioned points in your post, I am assuming that you mean to emigrate to New Zealand and become a Permanent Residnet here.
There are other options for you. You could come on a temporary work permit to try out NZ for a couple of years if you found a job in your field.
Also , you are young enough to consider simply coming to NZ to travel around the country, have some fun , with a bit of work here and there in between. That would be a Working Holiday Visa.
Yes. It has been known for an employer to wait 6 months for an employee. My husbands first employer waited 6 months.

Certainly it is possible.
Can I just caution you that NZ is in recession. Jobs are not plentiful right now , just like the UK I suppose.
I looked up archivist in the NZ careers guide. It's not something a plumber's wife comes across very often, although I do really enjoy dabbling around genealogy. One of my nieces has just completed a history degree and has begun work exp at a museum. I love that fact , as it is something away from the norm. She didn't take a year out to travel or do her OE.
Anyway, from what I read, archivist work can be hard to get into . Dead mens shoes, so to speak. Please have a READ HERE. from 2007.
Don't let this put you off for applying for jobs in this area though. It is specialist IMHO. Nothing ventured . Nothing gained.
Happy posting.

thanks for your help BEVS!
I 'll make sure to post in the main section now
I have contacted some British Archivists who have made the move to NZ and asked them how they did it. Also joined the NZ Record Keeping Association Mailing list to see what jobs arise and to spread the word. I'll keep trying though
Good luck with the family history search!

Hopefully, a job offer will come through for you. Even though the skill isn't on the shortage lists , it is very specialised in my opinion .
I enjoy the family history searches. Just starting one for my friend and neighbour here. She shows me how to make greeting cards and other craft type stuff & I will show her how to begin looking for her family history. I also make the odd memory disc type stuff which I love doing.
