Heat Pumps in NZ
The greatest invention since the Romans came up with central heating.
What is it about the uniquely Kiwi love affair with these things? Is it just that they are better than nothing?

Hello DC 10. We've just paid to have a heat pump installed on the ground floor of our house. The same company will return next month to put another one in the loft void and create vents in the ceiling of the upstairs rooms and linen cupboard so there is heating upstairs too. We paid to have them install timer devices for both pumps. We end up with warm air heating similar to what we had in the UK in 1995 which had been in the house since it was built circa 1970. So your remark about it being better than nothing is, to me, quite correct.

Without resorting to chopping logs or the Kiwi pastime of scavenging for pallets and free firewood then a heatpump is supposed to be one of the most cost effective method of heating. They do say that you get more heat out than the cost of the energy to run them, which males them extra attractive to canny Kiwis.
I can't be doing with the log thing and lighting fires, our house had no heating at all and no fire. I need the comfort of the instant flick of a switch or on timer so that we wake up to or come home to a warm house. Central heating is prohibitively expensive and for us the heat pumps were the only other option. Happy with ours anyway , it serves well a few days in the summer also for a chilly blast on those horribly humid Auckland nights.

Re: Heat Pumps in NZ
We bought our house in May 2010 and without any propoer heating system (other than a gas 3-bar heater), I really struggled to get through that winter.
Fast forward to this past winter - we got a heat pump installed in April or May (can't remember), and it was fantastic.
Much better than the UK norm - having central heating / radiators that take ages to warm the house up and need regular maintenance to be able to work at their premium capability.
They're quiet, out of the way, and as one of the posters above has said - they work and they are cheap. It's as simple as that!
