Heading to Hamilton.....maybe
Hi everyone.
Obviously I'm new on here, so I thought I'd say hello.
My family and I are flying out to NZ in two weeks time to check out some prospective business opportunities, and I'm currently very excited, nervous, unsure etc. etc.
I'm currently a director of a Specsavers store in the UK, and have been invited to do the same in NZ. I'm not sure of all the prospective locations yet, but I do know that one I'll be looking at is a recently opened store in Hamilton.
I would appreciate any feedback about the area, good or bad, especially regarding areas to live, schooling, cost of living etc.
Incidentally, my soon-to-be wife is a secondary school teacher, teaching biology, chemistry and physics, and would obviously be looking for a job. If anybody knows the best organisations to approach regarding teaching in NZ, I'd be very grateful
Nice to meet you all, and thanks for looking. I'm off now to search the boards for information.

Specsavers are taking over it would seem! There is one here in The Mount and another one opening in Tauranga - same Franchisees I believe. I know Howden40 a user here on BE was looking at the possibility as he works as an Optician here - but then his wife and son bought a local pub instead!
Hamilton is a nice town I think. Pretty and well situated so as to be accessible to the coast and Auckland and really slap bang in the middle! I don't know what it's like to live there though.
Maybe start a "forum search" on the main NZ page for Hamilton or start a new thread asking for info from people in the area?
Good luck.

Welcome to BE David. Hamilton seems a nice enough place but too far from the sea for us. Have some friends who live that way. Rented in Hamilton first but bought in Te Awamutu, south of the city.
Good location for seeing the north island from:-BOP, Rotorua, Taupo, Waitomo, Auckland etc all within easy reach.
Your wife will be snapped up for teaching science. Good luck with your journey.
