Hi - I wondered whether any one knew any thing about Hagley college in Christchurch. It sounds good from their web site & ERO report, but it would be good to hear if any one has any personal experience of the school.
Cheers.

Hagley High is a very old established college that has undergone a lot of innovation since the late 70s. It was the first (and still the leading) college/secondary school to implement an adult education program for those who for whatever reason missed out on completing their educationw hen younger.

My youngest daughter goes there and loves it in comparison to her previous school (Linwood High).

Hi - thanks for your reply.
Would you say the school was more for young adults returning to education, or is it good for pupils still in education ?
DS would be starting yr 12 as he's 16.

Cheers

My daughter has just turned 16. Most of the school population are regular students aged 13 -18. It's just that they have an adult student population that socialise within their own group and have their own separate common room.

Regular students it has been found, can actually benefit by the integration of a few adult students in their classes. Adult students tend to have a motivating influence on the younger ones. There might be 3 or 4 Adult students in a class of 25-30.

I am starting there myself in Feb as an adult student, but don't actually know the place that well, it looks good. The course I am on you have to be 19 to do so I probabay won't have much contact with the kids.

I'm terrified, its been a long time since I was at school, but if all goes well this will be the 1st of 4 yrs, and I will be fullfilling a burning ambition, its now or never.

I started my nurse training at 38 - I was terrified I would be by far the oldest, which wasn't the case at all. You choose to do this, have faith in yourself and chase that dream!
Karma for believing in youself.

Good for you Watt. Best of luck with that and I"m sure you'll be fine once the 1st day nerves are over !

Kiwi child - your daughter is the same age my son, thanks for the feedback. It sounds ideal for our son as we have just bought a house that's out of zone for the school he's registered to start at on the 7th Feb !!

Our prob is that Hagley College isn't opened for registration or to look around untill 7 th feb which is the date he's due to start at the other school ( complete with uniform which we haven't bought yet ) so I need to be sure we're doing the right thing & that he can continue the subjects he was doing in Auckland.

Thanks again..

Don't buy a uniform until he is settled at one school. Hagley is a large school. I'd be pretty surprised if he couldn't study same subjects there.

Good luck mate. You'll be fine once you get chatting to some of the other adult students, and settle in. And don't be surprised to find the kids interested in chatting too. Do remember to ask questions if you need something clarified. Some adult students feel a bit shy (or dumb) asking the teacher questions. What's dumb is not asking when you know you haven't grasped what they are on about.

At uni, we ask q's all the time...make the buggars earn their money

Thanx for the goodwishes and karma guys.

I swing from being really excited to terrified, but its not the work which terrifies me most, its the logistics of the whole thing.
We live in Kaiapoi, my 9yr old daughter goes to school in Kaiapoi but my son is starting intermediate in Burnside, so its my job to get everyone including myself to school at the right time. Hubby can't help cause he works in Ashburton and is gone by 6.30am, could we be anymore spread out!!!!

You could always rent you house out in Kaiapoi Watt and rent in Christchurch for a bit with the option of being able to return to Kaiapoi in a few years?
Good luck with the studying

We like Kaiapoi very much, and you don't get as much for you money in town. At the moment the thought of a house move on top just brings me out in a rash, Hubby is looking at work options to bring him back closer, but when it comes to high school time Sky's suggestion might just fit the bill, dependng on which High school we like best.
For the moment I'll just have to stick with the travelling. Going to downsize my lovely truck to keep petrol consumption down, and I will probably end up being always 5mins late, but as my Hubby pointed out what are they going to do, write a letter to my mum!

The things we do, says she sat at the computer wearing her sons new school shoes to soften them up for him!!!!!
