Default Good bookstores in NZ or good site to buy books?

Hi

I'm from UK and usually buy a few things from amazon.co.uk. I still buy from that site but obviously the delivery makes it pricey. I wondered if anyone knew of any particularly good bookstores or other sites good to buy books here. Thanks

Usually I buy my books on Trademe, both new and used, as it's the cheapest way most often!

NZ 'online' shops are http://www.fishpond.co.nz/?gclid=CNz...FRo-awodAkq3eQ
http://www.borders.co.nz/home.asp
http://www.whitcoulls.co.nz/web/home.do

http://www.newzealandbooks.co.nz/
http://www.simplybooks.co.nz/?gclid=...FRMUagod4l9bdQ

http://www.secondhandbooks4u.co.nz/bookshop/index.php

Although i would say from my experience, that there is a better selection and usually cheaper options abroad....even Amazon if you can combine postage on a number of books!

I like our local UBS (University Book Shop) here in Dunedin. Its quite like a Waterstones but unfortunately not as cheap.

The book store on the corner of Lambton Quay in Wellington is also pretty good. Sorry, I've forgotten its name.

Borders is good if you subscribe to their emails and wait for the 30% off vouchers to turn up every few months!

Books here are generally pretty expensive from new, Borders do some good vouchers when you sign up to their weekly email, and they generally have a 3 for 2 on some novels, Whitcoulls and Dymocks are the other two main highstreet booksellers here.

Plenty of independant bookstores and second hand bookshops around too

There is still one in Queensgate though, but i do think they were a bit rubbish and old fashioned so not a huge loss.

Trade Me is great, especially if you go for the bulk buys. My friends and I are members of Doubleday and we confer before we order and then swap them around

Books are expensive to buy but the libraries are excellent (especially here in Wellington). They also have racks and racks of magazines (including some UK imports). I borrow books regularly but if I want to buy something in particular I generally look for it on Trade Me (same goes for dvds).

Yep, agree with general sentiments echoed above. Books are expensive in NZ, I find it's often much cheaper to buy via Amazon even with the postage cost.
Also agree regarding libraries, I've just joined the local library and pleasantly surprised that is well stocked and has a decent stock of magazines too.

oh, yeah, the Welly library is super, but doesn't mean they do have everything you need. so I have to visit the magazine store (next to the Astoria cafe ) on a regulary basis...to read & buy some favourite British magazines..... ex) "British Idealhome" etc. however I still receive UK current affair magazines from Britain as well as some classical music magazines from overseas, because they are not available here .. (used to get Scientific American too.... from the States... it's much cheaper.. )

am quite happy with a vast range of music/cds in the library. saved me a huge amount of money since I was young here...

am not keen on buying books at bookstores here really..expensive rip-off... unless it's secondhand one and REALLY CHEAP... I paid $4 for "Bill Clinton's My Life" last time..

The trouble is I can't often find particular books I need ...in NZ bookstores.... so I usually get secondhand academic books, British cookbooks and cds from the UK. think they are still cheaper ... than buying new one here.

btw I was amused ... Why Dymocks closed down?

Plus with the libraries , if it's "out" you can reserve it for when it's returned ...

$2

I always do that -- for Jamie's Ministry of Food

think I'd better buy the copy from the UK...soon. $2 x 10 times = $20 I've already done that 5 times at least... silly, eh?

I assume they were losing cash! With Borders and Whitcoulls pretty near that Dymocks store always seemed very old fashioned and poorly stocked compared to the other two big bookstores.

It is just that franchise store that is closed and Dymocks did say they want a store in central welly but will not be the franchisee's who were in charge of the old store.
