Re: General cost of bills in NZ

OK here are ours for a family of 4 (2 kids 8 & 7) and we do watch food waste and electricity, not to an uncomfortable level.

Phone & Internet = $83
Sky (HDi) = $62
Petrol x2 = $250
Rent = $1600 (new house)
Food = $400 (approx including wine and beer)
Mobiles = $50 (pay as you go)
Electric = $100 (so far with heat pump for heating, but expect a little higher as it's getting colder)
Weekend entertainment = $280

This isn't written in stone, but we live OK but as I say we are careful to reduce our usage of food, electricity etc.

I did a basket of goods comparison for my work a while back, looking at prices at New World in Wellington with Tesco online for the following basket of goods.

Australian red wine
Ibupfrofen
Washing powder
Cabbage
Broccoli
Bananas
3ltr Semi skimmed milk
Wholemeal bread
Tin plum tomatoes
6 eggs
100g Nescafe granules.

Coming to £21.80p at Tesco and $52.27 in New World.

Using an exchange rate of 2.573 dollars to the pound you can see that Tesco is marginally more expensive at $56.14.

The exchange rate has drifted a bit since but this is roughly right.

i could believe this, in the uk we were roughly 170 a week shopping with mabye 30 spent at spar on milk bread through week , here 200 dollars to 250.. i have always thought it cheaper here for groceries, certainly in np.. we could not affoard to spend what we did in the uk on groceries here, if we did we would be looking at say 500 plus bux , well we could affoard it but where would i get cash for scrap booking each week lol

Hi, just posted this in the other thread about NZ Costs;
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...=1#post7788413

Might be helpful although I have no family/house (or even girlfriend at the moment actually :unsure: ) to spend money on.
