Decades of denial:
Damning report warns New Zealand's environment is in serious trouble
I think many people here have known this for ages now . Have seen firsthand as things have worsened despite all efforts for it to seem otherwise. The report merely underlines the problems.There is talk of predator free. Of drastically reducing plastic use. Many many volunteers work at conservation projects and the like. Global warming and its effects. Farming. Loss of habitat. Urban development.
Doc Dept operates on a shoestring. Some people still see some native bird species as pests or a waste of their tax dollar. Some rail against removal of non-native mammals from the bush because it would interfere with their hunting. Some walk dogs or drive vehicles on foreshores regardless of the wildlife such places contain.
One wonders if anything can be done to arrest this 'progress' .

The whole world is ****ed. Too many people, the large majority of those people do not care enough to make changes. Our generation will be OK, the young ones I'm not so sure!

Doesn't quite fit with the "clean, green" NZ we hoped to find when we emigrated.Not that Australia is far behind, if at all ...

NZ needs to subsidize farmers for environmental protection. I think it was decided decided to cancel all financial support to farmers in the 90's. But they allowed them to pollute instead. That was a deal. Government thought they could save money. But they were wrong.
In the end I believe the only thing that will tralla help us is putting a price on the services that the environment provides us with and charge people for using it.
