Exclamation THE COST OF LIVING IN NZ

Following on from BEVS suggestion, I though I'd start a new thread based on OUR monthly costs

We are in rented accommodation at the moment, so our costs are different to a home owner (no rates or water to pay for).We live in a 4 bed modern house and have a heatpump and electric cooking facilities. This does not include any food clothes, days out or pocket money

There are 2 adults and 3 children

Here goes

$1738 RENT
$275 ELECTRICITY
$220 FUEL FOR CAR
$120 RUNNING COSTS FOR CAR (service, wof reg, road user charges etc)
$150 SCHOOL CHARGES&DONATIONS/UNIFORM
$87 HOUSE INS.
$79 MEDICAL INS.
$73 LIFE INS.
$65 PHONE
$60 BROADBAND
$45 MOBILE

$2912 TOTAL

Hopefully this is helpful to anyone reearching a move at the moment and it's always good to compare your costs to others just to see if we can trim anything off anywhere

To give you an idea of salary....$64 ish K will give you about $1950 per fortnight. Thats for some one on normal tax. Once you have PR you will be able to claim tax credits..the more kids you have and the less you earn the more you get!!

Neither of which of course include any potential car finance payments of course.

And remember you need a bond and rent up front for any rental property!

remember though you can't claim tax credits and the temporary overseas tax exemption, so if you go for tax credits you will have to pay tax on any rental income in the UK, etc, etc.

That's interesting..alas like the 3 yrs for Citizenship (now 5) I missed the free 4 year boat for new emigrees thus pay UK tax on my measly bit of UK interest. But its a word of warning to those claiming the 4 year exeption on UK earnings that they'll not get tax credits aswell.

Also how about child care?

Although the ECE gets you some of the first 20 hours for 3+ year olds the costs of sorting kids in the holidays, etc should be taken into account, as you are unlikely to have immediate family to sort the kids with - bear in mind you are unlikely to get the same holidays (as an adult) as you had in the UK and the kids are usually left with holiday clubs, etc. and you are more likely to have a sick leave allowance and that this will come into play if the kids are sick over a certain number of days.

If you are badly off and need help with child care then go to the WINZ website and check out the subsidies for childcare and OSCAR.

This is really useful information for budgeting - does anybody else have these kinds of figures they would be willing to share?
