Default Cost of health Ins

Has anyone looked into the cost of health insurance, or got any idea of the costs? We know the basics about GP visits, dental costs (very high) but we are not sure how much insurance will cost each month?

My OH has accepted a job in AKL and we should be there in September. It has been suggested that we check with : www.southerncross.co.nz or www.sovereign.co.nz as these are the two main Health Insurance people over in NZ. They both give quotes online.

Hope this is useful.

you might like to go to www.AffordableHealth.co.nz as well. They also do online quotes via email.

There are also numerous other companies who offer reasonable prices too. Depends on where in NZ you are going to be situated. Most cities have good affordable insurance plans.

Any recommendations from people who are already in NZ...who did you go with and why???

Approximate costs would be good too although I realise this is deeply individual based on personal health circumstances...we're a bunch of old crocks so I reckon ours will be astronomical...

Hi Caroline
When I was living in NZ we were all insured by a company called Unimed & their rates were really reasonable for entire family coverage. Cant recall the monthly payments but were well affordable for hubby & 3 kids & coverage was great. When each child turned 18 they took over their own policies but coverage continued so they lost no benefits etc. Will not however cover any existing conditions as is the policy of most insurance companies in NZ.....am thinking one of yours has diabetes so that probably wont be covered but like Ive stated before they will be classed as a high user so costs will be a lot cheaper. Hope this helps a little

Hey Cindy

Thanks for that. ...Presume they've got a website? ...

Yep (or should that be Yip?? Only teasing... ), Diabetes for the middle daughter is a bit of a problem when it comes to health insurance poor kid.. but at least she'll get the high user rates so that is some consolation....

Will have a look at Unimed and see what their rates are...thanks again...

Not too sure on that one re your medical. Just remember when we first joined we had to go to our Gp for full medical but it wasnt anything to worry about really. The thing I liked about being with them was your benefits went up every year & you got 80% of all your expenses back etc. We had only been with them for 6 weeks when two of our sons required surgery & they had it done privately within days & they covered all the cost which was wonderful because we couldnt have afforded it & would have had to have gone on a public waiting list. The following year the youngest son had his tonsills out, also privately & again all expenses paid by insurance so we certainly got our moneys worth out of them real quick. There are obviously other companies who are just as good but for personal reasons I found Unimed a good company to be with & one that was very affordable for us. Hope you find something that suits your needs
