Re: Christmas and Birthday come at once...
Just bring everything as you can always sell it on TradeMe if you don't need it. I packed a couple of sets of new towels in our cases because towel sizes are smaller here. I like the large bath sheets and hand towels that M&S sell.
Good luck with everything and shout out for help as you need it. All of us on this side of the planet have been through it and know how stressful it can be

Great shout on the towels, I will have a look at what is in the sales!
My sister will be collecting me from the airport, so no worries there. x

Come on down..
I brought a load of clothes and shoes an discovered jandals and Merino wool....the clothes and shoes I brought stayed in the cupboard....
Register on line to HMRC before you leave as they communicate with us poor sods by slow boat from Malta
Make sure you ask your UK bank for verification of NZ support.
Bring some good quality sun glasses.....it really shine bright down here...
Why would a librarian need to bring a Kindle

I would say buy here, that will be about one of the only things I could think of which you would have a lot more choice here. Try to catch Briscoes on a day that they have a sale on - that'll be most days but they revolve through certain items being on sale on certain days.
Usually it transpires that the exact thing you want will not be in the sale at the precise time when you actually need it to be and therefore you end up paying through the nose. Some shops have seasonal stuff just for a short period of time - often way before the time when you decide that you might need one. e.g. BBQs and fans will be in huge supply in October but when you want one in middle of summer you might not find one. Winter bedding, flannelette sheets and heaters will be piled high in the shops right now but may not necessarily be the case come June and July.

Congratulations, that's all great news
For travelling I'd recommend silk, sleeping bag liners as they come in useful for a multitude of things. They're incredibly warm and pack into a teeny tiny space. I also tend to carry travel, microfibre towels as they also squish down small, can be very absorbent and can be used as towels, blankets etc.
If your violin is an antique you might need a certificate of antiqueness or some such. We have a 400yr old grandfather clock and have been warned we might need extra documentation for it. Hopefully someone who has actually done the move might know more.

TWSO is a lovely community orchestra and very welcoming. Don't be shy about joining
We have shipped/travelled with violins and violas SIX times in the last ten years and have never used specialist insurance but have taken careful photos and listed them individually on the policy when they have gone by boat. You need to slacken off all the strings and think about the potential humidity issues. For this reason, when we did the uk to antipodes we took the most valuable four (thankfully there are four of us) as hand luggage and booked flights where they were considered an extra to hand luggage (check carefully - not all flights allow this) and ran onto that plane to bag the overhead locker! Coming from the uk, if you plan to ship it/them you can look at Letton Percival marine shippers too for an excellent quote - my mother made several claims with them with no quibbles. Also, if you have any flight cases pack them up in those even if shipping - if you can afford it buy some because they are very expensive out here. Lastly, if you're shipping them by sea make sure they are packed in a case clearly marked as top stow but if you only have a couple bring them on the flight with you if possible.
