Default Catch 22

I am currently waiting for my Visa application to be processed (sent to London last week) and reading the 'timelines' part of their website, if I had a job offer, (I haven't, going over on SMC hopefully) then I would be put to the front of the queue.

Now, reading the majority of the NZ Jobsites, the final statement in any job advert is that 'the applicant must be a NZ resident or have a NZ work permit'.

Should I go ahead and apply for the jobs and explain in my cover letter my predicament (ie. waiting for visa to be seen/processed) and highlight the fact that the quicker I get a job, then the quicker I can get out there!! Or does this wreek of desperation?

Any clues?

The normal requirtement is that the applicant must be legally allowed to work in NZ.
Any application can have a note that on your arrival in NZ, you will be allowed to work. If you're the person they want, you'll be fine.
Best of luck.
