How are you going to get the children to the airport though? By bus or taxi? We used a rental car, which is why we needed to keep the car seats with us and we were going to have a rental car in NZ too...

If you're getting public transport to the airport, then you can do without your carseats obviously, but should you be using a rental car (or buying one) in NZ, then it may be useful for you to know that Plunket hire carseats out.
