Buying a car privately ...
Hi,we have always bought cars from dealers in the past when we were in NZ ... but considering buying privately now ... are there checks or websites that can be used in terms of checking out ownership of the vehicle and whether there is money outstanding on it etc ... cheers.

I've bought maybe 2 cars from dealers but >10 privately over the years.
Its generally pretty obvious if something smells dodgy (metaphorically, and literally!)... you can ask all sorts of questions and just gauge their response before taking it for the all important test drive.
I did, however, use carjam before looking at the car and asked lots of questions regarding ownership history and work done etc. before looking at all paperwork. I generally give any car a miss when paperwork is missing (by this I mean all service receipts etc.)... and also if the owner has only been the owner for <1yr... particularly <6months.
Good luck!
