Buy to Let in NZ
I'd like to buy a property in NZ so I can let it out most of the year and use it as a holiday base for my family during the UK winter months.
Can anyone suggest a good place with the following key points?:

You could try the South Island.

Are you a socialist?
Or is it just simple jealously?
Just do your own thing and find your own peace

Leaving that aside, I think the OP will struggle to meet all his criteria. You could try the Hibiscus Coast area - which is where I live - there are still some affordable properties around that would do as a holiday house. Hav a look on Harcourts, Bayleys etc. Here's an example for £100k:
Stanmore Bay cottage
There are a few others around which are vague on price, you may be able to find something if you talk to the right agents. The Hibiscus Coast is around an hour from the airport, out of rush hour, has fantastic beaches, a reasonable collection of shops and restaurants. I wouldn't say the night-life is great (but with two small kids I don't get out much), but there are enough cafes and restaurants to give you a few options for evenings out.
If you're willing to stretch the travel time and cut back on the night life you could venture further north into Rodney district, you may get better value.
PS, I wouldn't recommend Kaiapoi in this case; even if I drive really fast in my SUV, which is great fun, I could never do it in an hour from the airport.
