Why doesn't NZ just get some central heating installation at a reasonable price?
You can do the average UK house for two grand all in.

Re: Big chill
We have a big four bedroomed house in Christchurch. Weatherboard, iron roof type house. 85 years old, wooden floors, windows everywhere and so far this winter we are not cold. This is due to the wonderful heat pumps that we have. One at the bottom of the stairs, which keeps the bottom floor cosy and blows air up the stairs and another in the family room which has the kitchen and living room and also dining room going off it. Really they do keep us warm. Amazing really.
So anyone who is really finding the cold houses a problem, get Heatpumps. Our bills are not small of course but you have to be warm. Its not a luxury in my eyes but something you need !!

In that lot you have heat pumps, underfloor heating, forced air central heating, and various others. NZ moved on from inefficient water-based central heating a long time ago.
My house has an electrical system comprising ceramic panels with individual room thermostat control - with the option to control it via a PC. Cost? Less than $1500....
