I think weather systems like these polarise opinion here in ChCh. 1/2 the population curse that it's going to be rainy and miserable, while the other 1/2 rejoice that as soon as it clears the skiing is going to be AWESOME!
They've had over a metre up Mount Hutt these last few days - may even be open tomorrow. Yippeeeeee

I got a call this week from a colleague in the South Island asking about the bad weather in Wellington.
Like the good wellingtonian that I am, I responded saying that it has been worse but wasn't too bad that day.
I then turn on the interweb and find that parts of State Highway 1 have been closed due to the weather. Ooops.

Re: Batten down the hatches NI'ers
goodness it's been hairy up here today. I haven't heard that anyone's been hurt though so that's good. It is eerily calm just now, I think we're right in the eye of the storm, it' supposed to get horrible again. Hope you're all ok xx

How insensitive! Australia gets it's fair share of terrible storms too (very recently in fact) and this one is scary to be waiting for ...

Started earlier than predicted here too, we were expecting it around midday today but it's been since about 9am - yuk!!
Hope everyone is warm and tucked up safely.

This is the only day I can remember where it has rained heavily all day, in the 16 months we've been here - and apparently the winds are yet to fully hit?

Looking at those wind speeds it could be said to be the equivalent of a Cat 1 or possibly 2 cyclone.....
Have to say I'm glad it went your way instead and didn't hit south east Queensland which was possible at one point. I'm sure we'll make up for it before long.Hopefully not while I'm on the watch desk tonight though
