Crikey really..that much for 2 bedrooms..........we just don't know how lucky we are down on the South Island.....

If someone wants to buy my house I would be happy to accept offers over $280k...its 4 bed on 1000sqm....on the South Island....

That's not likely though. Underlying economic growth, extremely low interest rates, lower number of people per house, favourable tax regime, constricted supply of new houses, support for first time buyers and a market that hasn't seen a major fall in years (which has reduced credit risk right down).

it happened in England. There were 2 or more people bidding for the same houses. We don't sell by auction very often in the UK so people were offering more than the asking price. Our interest rates were also low. We even gave out 100% mortgages for first time buyers.

It may not happen this or next year but it eventually will. look around the rest of the world, it has happened in many countries.

Friends of ours are selling a three-bedroom house in Gulf Harbour for $479K.

Living in Auckland is all about compromise. We liked the Whangaparaoa Peninsula when we first came here in 2005, though we had originally planned to buy on the North Shore. We decided that the NS was not right for us & so started to look around the Peninsula.

Our compromise is that OH has to commute to the city (as did I when I was working).

That is one area where I think prices are actually reasonable. The ferry's a good option so long as your job allows the start/finish times. If only there was a train service to the city from there!

Some cracking houses up there I'd buy.

Yep a train service would be great. There is a bus service that quite a few of my friends get. As a midwife I used to have to drive in every day but the traffic wasn't bad a 6am!

OH takes the car if he has late meetings but takes the ferry otherwise. There is talk of increasing the number of ferry times to the city & back.
