Answer this........?
Even after several years of living here, there are things I still don't know or understand about this country and some unfathomable things that seem ridiculous or may never make any sense at all.
There are still plenty of lightbulb moments when things suddenly click and fall into place; some strange things you never noticed were different before or just quietly wondered ....what the hell.... or why???? In the spirit of 'there's no such thing as a stupid question' lets see where this goes. My question for today is this: Why do the shops insist upon taking the skins off of red onions and not the brown or white ones? I find them really offputting and they just don't look 'right', they look old and tired or pehaps it's boiled I don't know. I'll only buy them if I see them intact with the proper papery skin attached. Not really expecting an answer unless anyone really knows, just interested in other's questions and quirky observations. |
Re: Answer this........?
How does Pak n Save get away with mugging people by putting prices up on items, just so that they can advertise them as specials for $5 week? Duh!!
Usual price $4.79, this week can be yours for just $5  Usual price $2.49, this week on special offer - 2 for $5  |
Re: Answer this........?
Why is it often cheaper to buy 2 x smaller packs than 1 larger pack of the same product?
|
Re: Answer this........?
Often find the same in UK supermarkets. For several months I bought 2 boxes of teabags and 2 jars of coffee, as cheaper than the single double size ones. Also, my favourite crisps (Walkers Sensations Thai Sweet Chilli ), 1 bag 99p or special offer 2 for £2.00!

Re: Answer this........?
I think they do it in the hope we dont realise
not sure about the onions |

Re: Answer this........?
Why do people strip the outer leaves off of things like cauliflowers and corn on the cob and throw them away in the shop?
Is it cos they is too tight and concerned about taking up valuable space in their own rubbish bin? |

Re: Answer this........?
Well my bugbear has been WHY DO THEY SPRAY WATER ON THE PRODUCE?
Honestly, if anything is going to cause a faster deterioration is moisture on the fruit & veg. I can't believe it's done for asthetic reasons but apparently it is. I always check prices & you're right, more often than not it's cheaper to buy 2 smaller. Also, how about the laughable Manager's Cut? I saw 2c off a toaster price of $49.98 as a SPECIAL. Are there really gullible people who'd fall for that? |
Re: Answer this........?
when i see things advertised in supermarkets i tend to look on the shelves below, its a trick employed by supermarkets to put specials at eye level, with specials not always being the best price, check out the lower shelves where you tend not to look as its below eye level

Re: Answer this........?
Who buys whole pig heads in PaknSave:confused:
There was a whole trolley full of them dripping onto the floor, just loose in the shopping trolley, no wrapping at all. Someone had left it in the middle of the aisle, even the NZers in there were looking at them as if it was the strangest thing ever... |

Nothing goes to waste, eh? What with the trotters, pigs ears and bacon bones all available, alongside the trays of chicken necks and lamb flaps. Those red onions sure look normal to me Crap Coffee, but yeah the price would indeed put me off of them a bit. Even though I would only buy one or two at a time for particular recipes or salads. I do understand the peeled carrot thing, as they are usually sold like that in sealed bags for convenience, or as kids lunchbox sizes at premium prices. I guess for some people life's too short to stand and peel baby carrots or chop things into uniform sized batons or slices. But I don't understand the red onion situation: there's no 'value added' time saving or anything as you still have to chop the top and bottom off and peel away the first layer of the scabby onion flesh before you can use it. |
Re: Answer this........?
when did crisps become chips .......... chips are something you get from a chip shop
|
Re: Answer this........?
Could they just stop calling them chippies please ? The word is chips. Potato chips aka crisps if you are British. Chocolate chips in chocolate chip cookies, ok. Chips as in hot chips if you are Australian and some kiwis, ok. Just drop the word chippies unless you are addressing a room full of carpenters. Or you are wondering if there is more than one chip shop in town. End of bulletin.

this is a matter for endless debate amongst kiwis, used to come up at Friday drinks around the time a "fresh off" expat arrived......along with speedos/togs..... all the kids I know call crisps "chippies" - doubt you'll change that one or "hot chips" - what almost everyone calls them now, just go to anywhere there is an event that is catered, "hot chips" is what the menu says, what the person behind the counter says and what most people ask for, unless they are asking for a cone or scoop or so and so dollars, where it's shortened to chips. |

I agree it is horrible and always think 'What's with the toddler talk?' Adult to adult saying chippies is so wrong. |

To be fair the lambs and deers ears were in the petfood section but odd that I should only notice them today. |

I was in a fruit and veg shop with my mum today, and when I asked her why the red onions were peeled she looked confused and said she thought that's what they looked like. She didn't realise they were peeled! I suspect that's how they were presented when they were first introduced to the country and people kind of expected it. I don't remember them being available when I was a kid, so they would have been a novelty at some point and therefore the colour demonstrated by peeling. Having said that, there were some unpeeled ones there too. We were in The Mad Butchers as well and there were 5 or 6 pig heads for sale. I asked her about them too, and she didn't know. I know they make brawn with pigs heads, so who knows. Haven't come across anyone who actually makes it these days though. Good to see the whole animal being used, although usually they are minced up and put in your sausages. |

Re: Answer this........?
Why universally, in NZ based on my travels do they put the piece of cake/sandwich/pie etc on top of the folded the paper napkin/serviette on the plate so that it becomes impossible to use serviette for wiping your fingers?
Is it because they lack confidence in the effectiveness of the dishwasher to clean the plates? On a recent holiday in Australia I noticed the paper serviette was invariably left to one side of the food item - which is what I would normally expect. Is it a requirement of NZ catering exams to do this, does anyone know? (Who cares I know ;)) |
Re: Answer this........?
Its the same here. Went to Morrison's today saw raisins/sultana's big sign reduced to £1 but on the packs it said 2 for £3. Asked assistant she went to check came back and said they are both right so I bought 1. I was still puzzled so asked the customer service she said the 2 for £3 had been on a promotion they were now all £1.
Went to Tesco the other day bought some Flash buy 1 get 1 free @ £1.88 when I checked my receipt been charged for both. Got to Customer Service, big queue and wait ages. No problem to get my money back. Assistant said there you go and gave me £2.76 I did not question it just went on my way home 84p better off. June |
