WOW
I have just returned form the East side of OZ...all i can say is WOW:thumbsup:
I am bewildered even more now. We are planning on going back to the UK in August after living in boring Perth for 2 years. After our mini trip to the East, we are so confused. We loved it over there...! Loved NSW and QLD. WA:thumbdown: What's one to do...i know i will still miss my family in UK, but don't know if i dare do the whole big move again. |

Obviously I don't know to what extent you like the east and you have to weigh that up vs. the UK. |

However, for me, not nice enough to compensate for how much I want to return home.. still just lovely holiday destinations. Hope your pondering gets the results you need; whatever that will be  |

I think we will have a re-think in a couple of weeks, see how we feel then, once the hoiliday head has settled. One thing is for sure, Perth is definately a no-go 100%.
But over East has to be one of our best holiday's. So glad we went. Best of luck! |

Re: WOW
I say give QLD a go. As a previous poster has said you will never know. I live in QLD and I am 50/50 about staying. I am finding it easy to stay at the moment because the economy in the UK is on the slide an jobs in my profession have practically disappeared since I came out here 16 months ago.
We have had no problem with flies and we have not turned the AC on once yet, not even come close. I still miss the UK but if I leave it will be because I miss the UK too much not because there is anything wrong with Oz...although I am disappointed I don't like it more. |
Re: WOW
So do you see what i meant about
i would up sticks and move to QLD tomorrow!!!!! I loved it over there and plan to head back that way for another Hol maybe next year (although there is talk about Bali with friends in the offing at the mo) Glad you liked it! Told ya you would! |
Re: WOW
Oh heck...that's bound to mess with your head!!
Now you've got to ponder the following; 1) If you don't move over east, will you always wonder "What if?" 2) If you do move over east and it still doesn't work you can at least say you gave Oz your all. 3) If you do move over east, it'll cost a fair bit of dosh. Will you still have enough to go home if you want to? Go away and settle your head for a bit. Then do some financial planning. If it turns out you want to try the east coast, put a time limit on it, say 6 -12months, you'll know whether you're going to like it after then. If it's not working, go home knowing you've given it everything. Our biggest regret is not moving to Melbourne in the first place. Ours might've had a better ending. Yours still could  |

Re: WOW
Glad to hear you had a good holiday - did you stick to the north or did you manage to catch the wonderful National Capital as well?:sneaky: Hope you can sort out what was holiday euphoria and what is substance enough to make you want to make a move eastwards.

In the cold light of day we saw that the issues that frustrate us about living in Perth were similar to the ones that would frustrate us about QLD in the long run. Plus OH would need a licence to work there whereas he doesn't need one here. Having said that we are looking at an investment property over East as we may well end up living part time UK/Oz a few years down the line.:) |

The weather for us while we were there was fantastic. Never rained once. After all the flooding they have been having, i thought i would need to take my wellies and canoe:lol: I now see Australia in a different light...not the boring stinking hot hell hole i live in, but an amazing place full of life and adventure:thumbsup: |

I am convinced that if we had gone to QLD initially we would have stayed. I still can't understand how I had 22 wonderful months living in Oz a few years ago and yet cannot settle this time. Anyway, a year on, although I did regret moving here at first, I have no regrets now. I'm glad we gave it a go. Life's too short for 'what ifs'.:) |

I hated Perth even though we lived in one of the so called nicer suburbs, Mt Pleasant and Applecross. We've moved around quite a lot, Perth, Sydney, Launceston - and now we are on the Mornington Peninsula - one one of the best places to be. Had holidays in Qld but just too hot and humid for us. But I still have this dreadful longing to be back in the UK. South Somerset is where I will always call home but for anyone stuck in that isolated desert called Perth - do try the other side of Oz before making that final decision.
We have decided UK is our home and always will be. So we are sticking to our plans and heading home. But the East side will be a definate if we return. |
Re: WOW
Just adding my 10c worth - cos they dont do 2's!
We live very near coolangatta but in the hills. Yes, it is beautiful, but I have to say that they (the dreaded shop assistants) are a damned site more polite in Brisbane (even if they dont mean it ;) ) Even 'locals' if they have a foreign accent here, get treated as tourists. That gets me quite cross. This area is great, its very green and there are NO water restrictions. I dont work for the tourist board - cos I still want to go home - too English I guess. I miss the daffodils :o I did mention the racism that some have spoken about in Perth to my Dad and (I sooo apologise for this if you dont agree - its someone elses opinion), that the reason for this is that Perth is the closest Aussie city to South Africa (which I have also lived in as a child - so dont shoot me!!!) Make of that as you will, I haven't visited Perth, but thought it might be something you might like to 'chew' over. Australia is an itch I have always needed to scratch ever since returning from SA and being told it is the land of milk and honey. Well, its not for us - at the moment - we have had some good times and made a few good friends, but we have also had some incredible bad luck while being here, which seems to occur everytime we start to think we could actually live here, so whether you believe in fate or not, we've decided to call it quits for the time being. We aren't 'oh woe is us', just kinda, well if that's the way it is, then so be it. :D If you can make it here, then power to your elbow, infact - do you wanna buy a house?? :D |

We've just started looking into Melbourne and have been giving Mornington Peninsula serious consideration. I miss home a lot but definately don't want to go back thinking what if we'd tried somewhere else and loved it!! |

Exactly. I just want my life back. And because it was good before, i am not worried about going back. Infact i keep having the same dreams over and over again about how my life used to be. Must be a sign:)
Again, a complete generalisation as we are all different, but I do wonder that those who maybe did not particularly like their home lives/jobs or whatever in the UK, are those who are desperately trying to convince themselves (others?) that they do love it here. They need it to work more, because the alternative to them was not better. They also appear to be the ones who slate the UK more on these forums. I then wonder if/when the rose tints for Australia will slip off over the years.. or if they continue trying to convince themselves..... |

Re: WOW
East side is 100 times better for holiday and weekends. I cant imagine living in perth, too remote, way too many rednecks and hillbillies. Heat so oppressive for large chunks of the year and just nothing going on.
Its like a really sterile retirement town... Not for me... East side has way more going for it, but its still Australia, still boring, still lacking any real culture IMO. Go back to the UK, way more going on, good and bad but interesting at least. Good luck |

I was expecting the worst, but pleasantly surprised. Now i'm back in Perth, i can feel my head boiling with boredom again:( even though the sun is shining. Or maybe that's it...the sun gives me headaches now...i feel naked without my sunglasses on. |

What was it about over East that you liked? Was it just because you where in holiday mode? Why not try thinking that about Perth, for however long you have left here think I’m on holiday for xx months/weeks and do some of the tourist stuff. Get out into Northbridge/Lederville or Subi, a couple of times a month OH and me stay over in the city and go shopping, pubing and clubbing. Not trying to say that you will suddenly full in love with Perth, but it may help your last few months bearable and you may go home with some good memories. |

Couldn't help being abit disappointed with it, but it was a very hot day. I love bike riding over in Perth though. We did it back in UK too, but must admit it is nicer to cycle here. Hey, let's go clubbing together:thumbsup: that's my favourite hobby:D |

Northbridge can be a bit rough, but it's no worse than my hometown on a Saturday night and have been lucky so far not to see any trouble. Also I prefer Subi for a night out. |
