Well what do you expect when British people go around forever accusing Australians of being convicts, and then any tiny sporting victory over Australia is splashed all over the cover of The Sun for the next twelve thousand years?
Britain means very little to a lot of Australians these days. Even those who are of British origin have it so many generations back, or have had their gene pool mixed with many other cultures, that the only times anybody even thinks about it are when someone mentions becoming a republic, or when the the Commonwealth Games are on.

If you think the Australians big themselves up you really have no idea about the Americans. Many Americans can't find Canada on the map! That's because they are taught that the USA is the greatest country on earth. It's called patriotism.
The 'Ontario region of Canada' is in fact not a region, but a province. It's also 1,076,395 km2 (415,598 sq mi), so quite large. As for your friends not knowing what goes on in the rest of the country perhaps they don't read past the local pages of the newspapers or watch more than the first 5 minutes of CITY-TV news. There are 2 24hour national news channels in Canada as well as all 3 national networks having national news programs on after the local news.

Certain people on the Canadian forum would have you believe that this lack of knowledge is quite typical with Canadians.............I have my doubts on that one and find it hard with modern media for people to not really know something about what goes on in their own country.

Meant to say province and not region. Also they do watch the news and read newspapers but don`t seem overly interested in what goes on in the rest of their country (one does know Quebec though because that is where she hails from) Certain people on the Canadian forum would have you believe that this lack of knowledge is quite typical with Canadians.............I have my doubts on that one and find it hard with modern media for people to not really know something about what goes on in their own country.
The provinces may as well all be seperate countries and as far as watching TV, in my experience in what was my area the Canadians that watched tv ( in which lots didn't), would not subscribe to more then they needed.....They dont like parting with their money.

Interesting thread, I spent part of my childhood in Africa and we never went out at night, had bars on the windows, dog that would bite anyone that was the way we lived our life did not think anything was different.
As far as patriotic I think people should be patriotic and support the country they live in and be proud what is wrong with that.
We became Australian citizens before our children were born as we knew they would be Australian and we support Australia in the cricket etc, the only thing is my oh who is a scot by birth will support Scotland traitor
I have no criticism of people who love who they are and where they live. Good on them.

I agree with you and Sans as my own conclusions lead me to believe the same as well. I only questioned them becuase Dorothy said something to the contrary. The many Americans that I know (including family members there) that I have met in either the USA, Europe or Latin America just don`t really have any idea, about what really goes on outside their own country, so I imagine the average Canadian is probably not too different. I also know that many Americans have little knowledge about what goes on in other states as well. ............I spoke to an American here in Spain this year about music and he thought Led Zeppelin were AMERICAN

I also belived that UK is a crap hole so I moved to Australia, but having lived here and experienced much worse crap now I changed mi mind and I say UK is much better than Australia, and next year I also move back. australia still looks like a colony: crap houses built as cheap as possible, cost of living is much more expensive.

I just notice that every stabbing that has ever taken place in the U.K gets every paper in the county on it.....But most of all drug related crime doesn't even make the news...I have heard of a couple of stabbings over here but have not made headline news, If it were London, we would all know about.. At the end of the day who would walk through major city at night, not me..
