Re: Where to retire?
I've never really thought about it - I'm only 40 though. I guess if I was going to retire in the UK - Cornwall would be a nice option. Otherwise, I haven't seen enough places to know for sure.
It would be nice to live somewhere temperate in the summer and stay somewhere warm in the winter - like Florida. |

Sounds ideal Simon. How do you get on with the "friends and family" bit though. Have you managed to build up a group in each location? I guess it's nice catching up with each set after 6 months away?

Re: Where to retire?
This website has been online since the early days of the internet and when I was surfing online as a fairly new expat in the mid-90s...I think some of the stuff may be a bit unrealistic for most people but there are some topics which are interesting and there are some good links to expat resources and other expat websites:

Nothing worse than being in a place and too feeble to have much influence over ones care future care if so required. |
Re: Where to retire?
I think for most people, the later in life you get, the more likely that the UK (NHS and supportive friends and family) would be the country of choice, but that's more of a "Where to go and die?" question than a "Where to live in retirement?" question.
Besides, by the time most of us get to that point, the NHS and welfare system will be screwed and the government will be pushing through legislation to legalize assisted voluntary euthanasia. |

Re: Where to retire?
The first answer to come into my head was Rye ,E.Sussex. BUT with all these years away searching for ? what, will it be too difficult for some ex-pats to settle anywhere? Will we be condemmed to a life of looking for something else? The more you see of the world, the more you want to see. When I went back to the UK a couple of years ago, it struck me how some people hadn't hardly ever been out of our village,, or the same pub!, and were quite happy about that. Before heading home, sometimes I think I would like to try the South Island of NZ, possibly Australia....When we eventually get back to the UK, if we ever do, will we just remember the best of everywhere we've been, after a while?
Wow.....that's all very deep for me especially at this time in the morning! |

Definitely plan to return to England! All of our rellies live there, including our daughter but her younger brother very likely to remain in the US..he's spent most of his life overseas, living in Singapore and New Jersey.
Hopefully will continue to retain a residence overseas though (if we can afford to) in a warmer clime and be like the "snowbirds" from Canada and the colder parts of the northern US who spend the winters as near to the equator as possible lol! Singapore is too expensive, but we may consider the retirement scheme for nearby Malaysia or Thailand and split our time in UK and further ashore. (I hate the cold, spouse loves winter skiing.....what to do?) :D:unsure: I guess when we are really old/ill health and unfit to travel far we will choose to stay in the UK near family, friends and the good old NHS...:) (I can't fault the NHS after spending a few years being resident in the USA) |
Re: Where to retire?
Aes1 I can understand the comment pertaining to US healthcare system after being here 25 years. Yet again I find myself in strange situation as to my opinins on it. Right now my brother has cancer and cannot afford health insurance. So treatment has been provided by the state for free and he has received the best of care..He does work but at 10 bucks an hour insurance is out of his reach..Did you sell your house yet? Mine is up for sale in Arizona with no movement. I will be lucky to break even - if I do I'll be fine with that in this market..Good luck with everything..

Boy, do I relate to your last comment!!! Main reason I am not staying in the USA is their whole healthcare aka take money from the sick system. If I had the money, I would retire half of the year in Thailand and the other half in England. But I don't:rofl: so I am presently thinking about Malta.

May I ask why Malta as opposed to other areas of the Med? I am also looking at this region.
