King Kong, I am going back soon and am focusing on Dorset, even though I have never lived there and really have no first hand experience of it. I am wondering why you say it gets your vote..... I would be looking at the coast. Any info much appreciated. I am not planning on buying, just renting a flat for now.

Re: Where to re-settle in UK?
Okay, my understanding of it is this. The Brython were the ancient Celts, the Romans turned up and decided it was Brittania - the land of the Brythons. So the Brits are the Celts. Pliny the Elder describes it (Britain) as 'Albion' in about 50AD. What he was doing in west Bromwich at this time is debatable, but my guess is that he was there watching a football team being promoted/relegated in alternate years from the celtic/roman premiership.
It wasn't until the arrival of the Saxons, who described non-Saxon's as strangers/foreigners: 'Walh' or 'Wallas' (Not to be confused at this point with 'where's Walhy?') This tradition has continued in the Anglo-saxon tribe, who still view everyone as foreigners, unless they are qualified to play sport for their adopted country and then they are English. The word 'Walh' can also of course be found in Cornwall, walnut (because it came from foreign lands) and the names Wallace Wallis etc. So William Wallace was William the Stranger, but then there is nothing stranger than an anti-semitic Australian who thinks he's American, pretending to be Scottish, painted blue with nothing on under his kilt. With regard to the cottage burning question, I can assure you that in the current recession, the only people burning down holiday homes in Wales are the owners as an insurance job. |

Re: Where to re-settle in UK?
I can tell you about West Dorset :D
Good points: Beautiful rolling hills and stunning coast line. Great schools Lowest crime rate in Britain Easy access to France / Europe/ channel islands by ferry; this ensures better weather & less traffic for holidays. Milder climate than much of U.K if you live on the coast. I rarely have to scrape frost from my windscreen in winter. Lots to do outdoors at weekends - on land and sea  Bad points: High unemployment in seaside towns, leading to social problems such as drug use being widespread. Rubbish shopping (I do lots on-line) Nearest big cities - Southampton and Bristol both at least an hour and a half's drive away. Hope that helps :) |

Isnt the shopping anygood in bournemouth /poole or dorchester kapri ? i always found them better than the crap here
Both Weymouth and Dorch have shops like M&S, Next etc but they aren't big shops, so the stock is limited. The supermarkets aren't the big ones that sell clothes, tv's etc - you have to go to yeovil (half hour) or Poole (45mins) for that. Poole & Bournemouth have better shops but they are at least an hour to get to by the time you've driven in and parked etc. For a lot of people this won't be a huge problem, particularly with on-line shopping being so easy. When I first moved here 4 years ago, I really missed big shops, but I don't now. It just means having a whole day out to somewhere like Southampton where the shopping is fab :) |

I don't intend getting a car so that's a concern of mine. Would love to be able to get by train to Southampton, though, isn't that where they have an IKEA? I would work for them, given a chance, love my IKEA!!! |
