Default What do we need to actually do to move back to UK?

As the heading suggests do we need to anything special to move back? Do we need to tell the tax people that we've moved back or will all that be done when (if!) we get jobs? Our daughter has just turned 2 so do we need to register her with the local council or something? Hopefully someone might know x

I think there's a wiki or something covering everything, but as no one's answered yet....

There is a form you can fill out for HMRC to tell them you're back and when you left. It tends to make the administration easier. I assume you can also get child benefit, so if you want that you'll have to sign up with someone. I don't think it's anything to do with the local authority, more the national govt.

For health care, you simply go to the local doctor and sign on. They won't give you any trouble unless you turn up needing serious treatment for an existing condition. In that case they'll want you to prove your intention to remain, which means showing that you've cut nearly all ties to where you are now. No house there, little money kept there etc.

But no, there's remarkably little requirement when we come home.

Picnic is an unknown quantity at this point

If you know where you will be settling it would be a good idea to start looking at nursery schools and infant schools and getting your child's name on the waiting lists.

When you leave Canada or soon after, you need to complete the NR73 form (see attached link) for the Canadian tax authorities or you may find you have problems in the future, like when you try to collect your Canadian pension. By completing and submitting this form they will know you are not a resident of Canada and not be expecting an annual tax return filed.

Pretty sure "northern beaches" is not in Canada... As beach locations go, the north shore of Canada would be a pretty cold place for a holiday if it was

Canada lists link just there for information purposes...

You will need a NHS ID in the UK. if you don't have your old one it can be traced through NHS.
For us, we registered with a Dr practice, and they had the forms for us to fill in, they sent if off and shortly after we received a letter giving our new NHS number in current database system they use.

You'll need to tell the HMRC you're back living in the UK, and you will need to tell the ATO you have left. If you are PR/Citizen there may be some capital gains tax consequences (deemed disposal of assets) if you establish Australian non-residence.

If you are PR, ideally you should postpone thinking about any return before you become a citizen, but if you must leave before then make sure you have your Resident Return Visa up to date.

Non-British/EEA/Swiss citizen family members must have a UK visa before leaving. British citizens must have a British/EEA/Swiss passport or a Right of Abode stamp in Australian passport.
