re: VAT, at least it is rolled into the sales price, not like the States where you buy a $10 shirt and the price at the till can be anything from $10 to £12 depending on what state you live in - so in the UK, "What you see is what you pay". Also, unlike the States, there is no "state tax" on top of national government income tax. And as has been said, property taxes in the UK are lower than many places in the US (though where I lived in rural NC, property tax was actually lower than my current UK council tax).
