We're back!
Just thought I'd let you know that we are back home and although we've only been back a couple of days, so far, it's fab :D
We've met up with loads of our friends and they were so surprised to see us again. (And pleased hopefully :o  ). I've been offered my job back at the pub and start again on Saturday night. Hubby already has a couple of interviews in the pipeline so we are keeping fingers crossed that he doesn't have to wait too long before he's back earning again. My eldest has been offered her part time job back again and my son has got an interview for a job. The only stumbling block is that my youngest daughter's place has been filled at her high school but we are hopeful that we can manage to get her in somehow. (She has just written a pleading letter to the head begging to be given her place back!). All their friends are so excited to have them home again. We are staying with my parents which is a bit of a squeeze but it's no problem so far. (Hopefully we'll get our own house back in March. We're going out car hunting tomorrow, and went out today buying loads of winter clothes. Anyway, will keep you posted on how things go here. Julie. x |

Re: We're back!
Hi Julie - you sound so delighted to be home, it comes over so much in your post. Australia is a nice country in many ways but it's not for everyone. You are so fortunate to have your home to go back to. Good luck with everything & have an absolutely wonderful Christmas :)

Re: We're back!
Thanks guys.
I am a lot happier, and so looking forward to Christmas in a cold place - just as it should be :D Julie. x |

Have a great Christmas. xx |
Re: We're back!
Its so nice to read the relief and happiness in your post.
Good luck and stay happy. 5 more days for me and i'm on my way too. Whisky |
Re: We're back!
Really pleased things are slotting together again quickly Julie, well done. Things will be even better once you get your home back and I"m sure your daughter will get a place - someone is bound to leave during the school holidays.
Take care. |

Hopefully you can now enjoy a good christmas with all your old mates & family and put your trip to Oz down to experience!! Good luck! Suzie |
Re: We're back!
Welcome home! You're not the only one looking forward to Christmas back here. It's great isn't it?
|
Re: We're back!
Wow, i havent been on here for a while!!! Just want to say WELCOME HOME.
:) Christmas is lovely here, isnt it? Its been a little more than a year for me now and I still love it. :D |
Re: We're back!
Thanks everyone :)
It's strange how you don't realise what you've got here until you haven't got it anymore. Does that make sense?  My kids haven't stopped smiling since they got back. In fact I've not seen much of them at all. And to Suzie (Toon), that's what this was. One of life's experiences. I'm glad we did it, but it wasn't for us and I'm so glad to be back. Julie. x |
Re: We're back!
I'm absolutely delighted for you! :)
You did it! It is almost as if it is a braver thing to do than venturing off to Australia in the first place, if you know what I mean. How long were you in Oz for? |

My eldest daughter went back last week - I've just called her on her mobile and both daughters are out round town having a ball - so delighted to be reunited and socialising again. I'm off back in a few weeks to join them - can't wait  |
Re: We're back!
Its lovely to read that those back are happy with their decision, as after putting ourselves through all this we seem to go through self doubt.
4 days to getting on that plane :D Went out with all my workmates last night, had a great time. Didn't cry (though they did). I think it is because i am well and truly ready for this next phase in my life. Good luck to you all. Whisky |
Re: We're back!
Well done Julie for getting back and getting things sorted so well. It is a very very brave step to make that massive move away, it is an even bigger braver step to admit it has not worked out and to go back.
Hope you and the kids will all be very happy. Perhaps you made enough friends in Australia to take a holiday there some time :D |
Re: We're back!
my family are due back in a few weeks so we will have another xmas here, my mothers neighbour has a daughter living in melbourne and they are due to move back soon saying the cost of living and routine there doesnt justify being away from family etc, her son spent 2 yrs in sydney and came back. There is a guy who moved to Perth and returned after 6 mths yet will not talk about why he returned cept to say he will never set foot in oz again.
could be warmest autumn on record they saying. went to new forest last week. stunning |

Hey Julie
You were out for three months if I've understood your blog properly? What's happening with your brother and his family? Weren't they emigrating too? Are they still going? Glad you're all feeling settled. :) |

Glad you're all feeling settled. :) We've moved back to the same little village where I was born and have spent my whole life and it feels good :) :) :) Went out yesterday and bought 2 cars. Just a couple of runarounds, but they'll do just fine. I worked back at the pub last night and have just finished a day shift today. It was so good to be back among all my friends and colleagues again. Some of them didn't know we were coming back, so it was funny to see the reactions on their faces. Just keep your fingers crossed that we can get my youngest daughter back into her high school tomorrow. We are going to grovel to the head  I'll keep you posted. Julie. x |

My brother came over here last October with his young children and they can't remember anything else now - they love it. Good luck on the school decision |

Is it because they know you are and it's affecting them, or is it because they're really not enjoying life? Can you treat it more like an extended holiday rather than hating every minute of it? I often think that it's a vicious circle if you're not enjoying where you are, then it gets you down and you hate it even more because you're down... if you see what I mean. I'm sure your hub loves you and hates to see you unhappy... but I agree, homeless isn't so good... If you went back, would family help you out? |

It's not Perth's fault, it is lovely here, but it is not for us. We need more things to do and the money is a worry also...also some other personal things but i don't want to mention. So after 8 months, i think we can say we did try..i know it's not long enough but we have tried! The thing is though that no matter how visually nice a place is, it doesn't automatically mean that we will be happy living there. I thought that I would be happy living in a warm country with clear blue skies, lovely beaches, unvandalised parks, nice house etc. But those things do not equal happiness at all. Sure they can help towards making a person happy, but there are many other factors too - social life, friends, family, lifestyle, culture, even general daily things such as talking to people who have things in common with you, bumping into people that you've know all your life, a sense of belonging. Moving to another country is far harder than most people anticipate. I thought that there would be some hiccups along the way, but was sure that we would settle , make friends and enjoy our life here. The reality of it is, that despite it being nice here, there are just too many things that we miss. For me, it's like one of those holidays that you've looked forward to for so long, but then can't wait to get home from. |

I know this will probably sound like I'm trying to defend Aus, but I'm really not... I was wondering whether her depression is down to being in Australia, or whether she would have become depressed in the UK too? I don't mean to cast doubt on what you say at all, but some teens do become depressed, and it might not be that being here has caused it, more that it was going to happen anyway... ? Given what you said in your pm, I presume you are getting some help for her? She certainly needs some counselling for sure.. Is that available to you or is it not financially viable? 8 months is long enough for you to know whether it's going to work or not, and given your personal circs, I'd be back on the first plane to be honest with you. I really think you need family support whilst you're all going through this. I won't say 'try another part of Aus' because financially, I don't understand how people do that! It's like moving country all over again! I'm sure you've considered it too. I have noticed your posts on the Aus forum and realised you are unhappy... I'm so very sorry it's been so traumatic for you all. Regardless of the money, I would be getting on the plane. Do you have a property to sell or are you renting? x |

Maybe you would be happier in a different part of Aus there is no way of knowing unless you tried it but as iPom says that's an expensive way to go especially if nothing changes. Have you put feelers out about hubby finding work back in the UK, would he get something easily, would you be able to move back to the same area you came from? Lots of questions and probably not many answers. One thing I would say, just because someone posts how happy they are to be back doesn't necessarily mean that it's true. Obviously it is in many instances but I also know that a fair few get back and after the first few giddy months realise that although Aus may not have been for them, the UK doesn't seem right either. LouiseD can I just ask, I have seen you put this comment before, when you state "We are also constantly told how fortunate we are to have gained visas to live in the "best country in the world" when have you been told this? I have never heard that, nor has anyone told me that I am living in the best country in the world  I am honestly confused as to who would say that and why anyone would accept it? I love the place and we are all very happy, but what's right for me is not going to be right for everyone. Even Aussies I talk to and they are mainly Aussie's I talk to daily - would never say this is the best country. What would you measure it by? |

If you live in Perth, you will hear pretty often from the media that not only is this the best country in the world, but that this is the best city in the best state. ;) |
