Rubbish.

It's still possible to find decent hotel rooms in central London for 40-50 quid.

(All prices are sterling)

Fulham tickets = 30 (bought on the day)
National Theatre Travelex tickets = 10 (bought well in advance)
Best seats in West End theatres = 25-30 (bought from ticket booth in Leicester Square on the day; sometimes they even have tickets for the ballet at the ENO...)
PROMS = 5 (standing tickets bought on the day)
Royal Opera standing tickets = 8-15 (best bought well in advance)
National Gallery = FREE
British Museum = FREE
Tate Galleries = FREE

et cetera

Worth every bleeding penny...

Temperature is now one of the key objectives for judging a good cask ale, along with appearance, aroma and taste. Cask ale should be served cool not warm ideally at cellar temperature 11°- 13°C (53° - 55°F).
Well the farenheit equivelent then you pedantic bastard.

What area? In January? An entire hotel room, not a cupboard in a B&B? I'll give you that it's not ensuite.

So make a list of what you'd see!

I'd go for the gardens, but that requires being there at a time of year when you cannot possibly stay for 40 quid a night!

Having visited London twice this year, we stayed at West Ham's football ground.(Quality hotels)All the private boxes have been converted into hotel rooms when not on match days. Each room overlooks the pitch.Price is £65 p.n per room but you get a huge, each as much as you like, breakfast in that.well worth it (look at their web site under the hotel etc.)Upton park tube station 300 yrds away, for the city. And if youve got a car, private secure parking in their car park.e stayed in Ray Winstone's private box/room last time(nothing special)

Just to clarify, I didn't mean London CAN'T be done on a budget. But when I'm planning a holiday I tend to think I'd rather go to a less glamorous destination and have lots of spending money, than go somewhere really nice and overstretch myself.

But if he's set on London then there is obviously lots to enjoy, London Eye would be my #1 recommendation. Oh and my wife says the Bus Tour is well worth doing.

Oh yes and for the authentic 'old pub' experience go to the Olde Cheshire Cheese on Fleet Street!
