Yep. I'd be wary of anything with a motor. Last time we returned to the UK in 2012, we brought a Kitchenaid food processor with us - it did work with a stepdown transformer, but the motor ran more slowly and therefore the food processor didn't work as well.
In retrospect, we should have just sold it before we left and bought a new one when we got there. Luckily Kitchenaid stuff seems to retain its value, so that's what we'll be doing next time.
If you do decide to bring them, get a proper, big transformer - either one of the ones that comes in a big metal box, or the ones you get from Screwfix that are like big yellow buckets with plugs on top. They're proper heavy duty and are designed for big power tools, so they'll stand up well to the demands of a sewing machine or mixer! The trick is to find somewhere to hide it...
