Why not stay in Spain, I would unless I had no choice, Scotland is part of the UK and the UK voted to leave the European Union so living in Scotland will not make a difference really.

Scotland could well be independent sooner than you think. When that happens negotiations will begin to join the EU - or perhaps EFTA. After elections to Scottish Parliament in 2021 we can expect rapid moves on that front, whether or not Westminster grants a Section 30 Order under The Scotland Act.

Those who rely on London media for information will not be up to date on this. Try the Scottish dailies or "The Irish Times"

I have no real choice.My daughter died & my granddaughter has only myself as a contact from her mother´s side.She lives in Scotland & would not want to inherit a foreign property.I need to make it the easiest way as I am elderly.Brits 1, am someone who has spent some 35 years abroad,self employed in Uk & on the Continent & denied from voting in the referendum.The Uk DID vote to leave the EU collectively but was not what the other 3 parts of the Kingdom wanted.If you follow the politics,as I do,you may see that Scotland is gathering more & more opinion about separation & even mumblings from Wales which is only a principality.Although it was not my first reason for relocation,I would support their reason for independence,even as English born from an affluent southern county, I believe it is a really bad move to leave the EU.For those doubters who say that no small country can survive economically I say do your homework.Look at Malta,southern Ireland &,near to me,Gibraltar as examples.However I have lived in really nice places in England previously & do respect the views of others who differ from mine.

There's even been talk that an independent Scotland could be the sixth country to join the Nordic Council, along with Denmark, Sweden, Noway, Finland and Iceland, and that it would share the same EFTA membership as Norway to start with.

I'm considering moving back to England next year, after nearly 30 years in Ireland. I'm not happy living here and haven't been for a long, long time. My hopes of emigrating to Canada have disintegrated, so now my only option is England. I've a recently divorced friend who's happy to take me in as a 'lodger' so accommodation isn't a problem. Hopefully I'll have enough money from the sale of the house here to cover my expenses for a while.

My main problem is selling the house and transporting myself and a horse over to England! I'm thinking of buying a car here and loading it up with my stuff (I won't be bringing furniture, or anything very big) and going by ferry, while a company takes the horse over. Thing is I don't want to go to the expense of taxing and insuring a car here just for the sake of driving to Rosslare to get on a ferry.

Can't you just ship everything and ride the horse to Rosslare and get on the boat with it?

Oh dear, sorry to hear that. What’s gone wrong in Ireland if you don’t mind me asking? I’m from the North but the ROI has sort of been my Plan B and another poster called Moses is always very positive about it.

Hope you get your move sorted soon. Probably easiest to get a removal company to do a “small load” removal for your few possessions, entrust the horse to a specialist firm and take yourself off to England with just a suitcase. Good luck!

I suppose I'm positive because it worked out for me, have a different mindset and I always say it's the location rather than the country that counts. Life will always bring challenges and unless it's about family/health most locations bring similar challenges and little things can make a difference. Maybe Gulf Stream just needs a change after 30 years but saying England is the only option doesn't make sense to me and would Canada really have been easier and better? It all depends on the location and at the end of the day, a move from Ireland to England is easier than any other move and just hire a car and trailer. Thinking positive a move to Canada would have cost thousands with a horse. The money you saved not moving can get you a derelict house with land in Cantabria, or will pay for several holidays in the future.

Go to the UK and buy a car first - go over on the ferry and get the train (or grab a cheapo Ryanair flight) to where you need to go, buy the car (pay to have the AA or RAC look over it to make sure it's a good buy), call an insurance company and get it insured, then drive it back over.

Technically you're supposed to pay VRT if you're importing the car, but if you're only there for a short time, the Garda aren't going to hassle you for VRT. We had a British-registered car in Ireland for over 8 months and nothing happened.

Devon and Somerset are really nice counties, Exeter is a big enough city if you want to visit for a "city buzz" but there are plenty of lovely market towns as well and in certain areas homes are good value. Somerset is also very nice Bath is just lovely and lots of other areas such as Bradford upon Avon, Portishead and Clevedon are also really nice and on the coast you also have Bristol which is a really vibrant city if you also want a trip into for a city shop etc. We are from the North West originally but we lived in Australia for many years we currently live in the Peak District but we will be heading to the South West area to live when we can. thank you, that is most helpful. We are interested to know how long you lived in Australia and why you never returned to North West? We are in a real dilemma in terms of returning to our roots or trying somewhere different. We really miss the English countryside and Southwest is really pretty or do we go back to our home town where we know? We have been away 30 years and are finding it difficult to choose a location 😩

thank you, appreciate your feedback. Interesting on the market front. Hopefully it will level off as the stamp duty holiday comes to an end. But the same is happening in Australia, people moving to regional areas as you get more for your money and better places to live. I guess the world will be a different place when this is all over :) Hope you find somewhere nice to live.

We were in Australia for 14 years my husband was much longer overseas, we stayed with my dad in the North West for 6 weeks when we arrived back in England we had a good look around and it was lovely to be back bit we missed two things...one being closer to the coast and while there is a lovely coastline in the North West the area's did not suit us for work and university for our son's and it felt a little to close for family as we had gotten use to coming and going as we liked etc, so we settled in the Peak District a good drive into Manchester or Sheffield if we need city Life and lovely countryside on our doorstep but we still would like to live in the south West our eldest lived near Bristol for just over a couple of years and we use to explore that part of the world when we visited him and we really loved the area of course the North West has the lake District and the North Lancashire countryside is also lovely but for us we had already "done that" when we first lived here we also felt a new challenge and new things would make things "different" when we came back to live. That's us though and if you want to return for family and be close to them then the North West might be the place for you. Good luck with your decision
