UK - 2021
My wife and I have had an amazing 15 years in NZ and have a great circle of friends.
Now friends are friends and family is family, so what is more important ?. Both our parents are getting older and our children all live in the UK and we now have, or soon will have grand children. The pull going back to the UK is even stronger. Now, we understand people are going to say you are bloody crazy to go back during this pandemic and whats happening around the world, we know its going to be very big decision !. I would like to hear from anybody who is going through the same situation and also anyone who knows what the job situation is like at present. I work in the automotive trade as a technical training manager for a automotive paint company and my wife works in office/admin. Our family is spread over the UK from Cambridge, Maidstone and Somerset. Any help or advice is most welcome. |
Re: UK - 2021
The job market at the moment is not looking healthy at the moment. The country went into a recession. The effects of COVID19 are still going on and it will take some time for things to get back to some sort of normality but it will be a while.

If you have a job, stay where you are.

Re: UK - 2021
We're planning to head back sometime in 2021 after a great 10 years in Australia, similar reasons to yourself.
This may well co-inside with semi-retirement (we're in our early 50's) or I may go for a transfer with my employer who are a large multinational software company. Fortunately there's a plenty of work available in my job. Planning is difficult as there are so many unknowns right now but we've sold our Australian property and should be mortgage-free when we return. I just found out we may be hit with extra stamp-duty which is a pain, see separate post. Another concern is bringing our (large, spoiled) hound back! |

Hi Freebo, I have just joined this site, very helpful. We have been living in Australia for 30 years and are planning to retire in the UK in 2021. Just a quick question, why do you have to pay extra stamp-duty? is this relating to UK?

As I said, that's my recollection however it no longer apples to me as we won't be moving back in 2021, now looking more like 2022/2023. |
Re: UK - 2021
Oh I see. We won’t be moving back until COVID is under control. Who knows when that will be. We are originally from North England but are hoping to relocate to Devon. Any information about Devon would be most welcoming 😊

lovely part of the Uk, but full of Airbnb and second homers; housing is a real issue. |
Re: UK - 2021
Good grief! Thanks for the warning.
I was reading something recently about the likelihood of a worsening shortage of private rental housing in the UK in general but hadn’t realized it was already a reality in Devon. I have a little house in Northern Ireland so maybe if the tenants move out at some point in the future I’ll use it myself. At least to start with. Best of luck - I hope your own housing situation improves soon. |

We went for a walk today along one of the main beaches in the north.... all the houses were guest houses, empty (2nd homes most likely) or Airbnb houses. It’s depressing. There’s no proper community in the small villages anymore. |
Re: UK - 2021
Hope you people get to relocate to Devon.I lived there in Paignton & Exeter many years ago.Just remember ,if you were not born there you will always be a "grockle"!Really nice county,I´m from Hampshire but have lived all over England & Scotland. In January I shall complete on the sale of my property here in Spain & hope to head back to Scotland. For me,being very pro-European,I do not want to live in England.
