Need to find a reasonable cost effective way to transport a cat from Melbourne to the UK-we are waiting out the 6 month thing-we are already here in the UK-Can anyone suggest how we can do this? Is the an alternative to pet couriers as they are charging over $2000.

you can do it , your self, but you might find if you dont fill in forms right it might cost you more, apart from sending them by boat which means someone has to feed them and exercise as well would cost two much as it would take about six eight weeks, thats not a bad price the only onther way is to re home them there

Australian Air express are the agents for Qantas. you don't need much in the way of paperwork, just confirmation of rabies vaccine and blood test cert. Also you need to have a vet do Frontline and administer wormer 24hours before departure and sign and stamp the appropriate form before boarding the plane. You pick your pet up from livestock reception at Heathrow, after all paperwork has been checked.
My dog who weighs 35KG was only $2340... so I expect that your cat will be much less. The only thing you will need to do is buy an IATA approved crate for the cat to travel in!
