Picnic is an unknown quantity at this point

Yes, hopefully the schools will be able to be flexible. Perhaps my experience was coloured by the dragon of a headmistress at my children's primary school?!

I know that in the US it is common for kids to skip a grade, repeat a grade etc. and it would seem to be the best and most sensible approach to tailor education to the child.

I wish you the best with your move!

Hi Picnic, yes I think the UK are more rigid over this, I wanted my son to start a year later than he did (he was just 4 going to school in the UK), and was told I could delay him but then he would go straight into year 1 and miss reception and I didn't want that, there seemed no flexibility in letting him start a year later - but perhaps it will be different now he's older.

Australia seems very flexible in letting you hold your child back - although from the other side of the coin I had a few negative comments about letting my daughter start prep here at age 4.5, she was more than ready though and has been fine.
