Taking car back to uk
Hi,
If we go back to the Uk,
Does anyone know what tax or charges you have to pay to take a car back from OZ we have only had it 3 months.

Sue, you were so positive about OZ before you came. Are you really thinking of going back so soon? Its very different from what people visualise from the UK but how about trying a different area? Good Luck D

I looked into it when we were thinking of coming back but it was going to cost a fortune and be a lot of hasel so we sold ours. It was brand new as well and we took a big loss when we sold it but at the end of the day we just wanted to come home and the monetry loss was worth it.
Best place for you to get an idea of tax etc is on the Customs and Excise web site www.hmce.gov.uk
Another good tip for anyone coming back in under 12 months with items they have bought new in Oz and not owned for 6 months. When you complete your customs declaration attach a letter to it saying why you have returned early (outline your problems etc) and Customs may waive any duty and VAT payable on these items. Mind that doesn't mean you can come back with 50 BBQ's etc. It was customs themselves that advised this and our removal company wouldn't have it that they would waive any duty and VAT but the very kind Customs official that cleared our container did just that. We didn't have a lot of new things to come back but would have still had about £250 to pay!!

Hi,
Our first visit to Australia was in 1990 when we first got married, we stayed for 3 months and toured around the cities, we feel in love with OZ.
We returned to the uk and had two children, hubby came again to oz to visit his brother who lives in Adelaide on his return he was excited and that got the ball rolling we applied with his brother sponcering us, we were granted our visa, at that time our children were 4 & 5, we put our house on the market e.t.c but huddys dad became very ill, so it was put off, Hubby went over with a mate (who met a ozzie girl and has since moved to Adelaide) to get his passport validated.
Life continued in the uk we had a house built, great jobs, great pay but always in the back of ours minds was Australia (more for my husband).
Anyway after hubbys father died we booked a trip for 1 month to Adelaide to stay with his brother, we took the kids and hubbys mother, had a great time and met up with the friend who he came over with, after staying with them listening to them, how wonderful everything was, we were hooked.
We returned to the uk and hubby sponcered me and the kids we were accepted and put everything up for sale.
November 2002 we got the chance for a all expensives paid trip to oz with channel 4 "A place in the sun" (hasn't be on TV yet), I had to get my visa validated so this was a good chance as we had not sold the house, so we left the kids for 2 weeks with mother-in-law and came to Coffs harbour which is a beautiful place.
Returned to the uk, house sold and arrived over here in March, hubby got a great paid job within 2 weeks, kids started school,
we were amazed of all the prices of thing, nobody told us about the little extras e.g stamp duty on cars e.t.c
Since getting here hubbys mate is returning to the uk (so much for all his praise).
Hubby and youngest son nearly drowned two weeks ago and this has put our views on what we want, and I dont want to die here, when we came over we said we would give it 5 years but what if we want to go back and our kids don't, little things matter we can't point out things to our kid's like "that was where I went to school".
I am not missing family and would be happy to stay, but hubby is miserable and really missing everything and what makes it worst is that his boss keeps phoning to say he can have his job back but the longer he leaves it the less chance, he is flying to Adelaide on 8th June to visit his brother for a week and we will decide what to do. We are going to Hunter valley for a week or so as he has had lots of job offers, so we will check it out.
Anyway we still don't know what to do !!!

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I know exactly what you mean when you say you can't imagine being here for the rest of your life....it is hard to imagine not going home at some point in our lives, and making this our home. Little things do matter, they're the thread that binds together our lives, and make us happy or otherwise. We're still thinking over our choices, but I think we're going to start looking for jobs back in the UK to get an idea of how when we might move back.
anyway, whatever you decide hope it all works out for you!

Consider shipping your car into the Irish Republic first as the import tasxes are lower there. Once in Ireland, simply stick it on the ferry to Liverpool, and as tax has been paid in an EU country, theres no more to pay. I dont know the exact figures or procedure but I know that Grey import Jap cars come into Britain that route.

The car is a Kia Carnival 2002 7 seater, 24,000km on the clock full service history, we paid $31,000 in March 2003 and will want approx $26,000.
We are driving to Adelaide on 8th July and staying with hubbies brother for a few weeks if we go back to the uk it will be in August,we will probably leave the car with my brother-in-law to sale, so if you were interested we could give you refusal and if you did want it my brother-in-law drop it off at the airport.
PM me and I will send you some photos of the car.
