Don't quote me, but I vaguely remember this being the case when I looked into sending one of our little darlings back for uni. In the end he went to Berkeley - still pricey but not quite as much...

That would depend on the LEA, most would require 12 months in the county to get SL finance.

Most banks offer undergrad loans if you ask for this reason but they don't promote them because there isn't much market as most EU students get financed from their home country.

What we are paying (for our share of costs) for Ds#1 to attend a good 4 year University in California, we could pay international rates for a UK university.

Here part of the $37,000 a year cost is picked up by grants and scholarships thank god.
True, but UC trumps pretty much most UK universities. More importantly he gets to play beerpong on a weekly basis, which is worth at least $10k/annum of any parents' savings.

Is he at Berkeley?

I hope UK employers think so when he looks for a job. He's not part of the UC system but at a private Uni.

That's true. But only UK residents can get full funding through loans and grants. EU national can get partial funding, but it's not very much and international students are pretty much buggered!
