Getting really ahead of myself here, but having just been looking at tax return stuff I've come up with this. New you start a ne job in the UK you have a P45 from the old one - think I'm still correct with that. So what happens if you've been away a few years, submitted your P45 with the P85 to get the tax back, so no longer possess a P45?
I know I submitted a P85 saying I was leaving permanently, so what do I do when I manage to get a job? Do I just go onto emergency tax while they sort it out?
ANyone done this recently?

Quite simple, the tax will sort itself out fairly quickly.

You have to fill in a form P46 http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/p46.pdf

For me, the employer just handed me the form when i started work i filled it in, they dealt with it.
Whilst it is being sorted out you might be lucky and pay NO tax for the first few weeks. Thats what happened to OH.

When I go back and fore I always do a bit of work and sign on and then sign off again. My dad worked away for years and told me you need to in order to keep your "left the uk" date more current. I dont know if its really true but I do it anyway and I always end up working because people just ask me.

it might be a possibility........be a while yet if it happens though.......
