I think sometimes it can depend on who is processing your letter!

I once put a British stamp on a post card in Paris, that was destined for the UK, it got through, my error was pointed out to me by the recipient. However, if an American had done that I would probably accuse him/her of arrogance.

Just saw this thread and I did a similar thing -- I lost my uncle last week and wrote condolence letters to my cousins -- with .98 stamps. Curses.
