Smells
My wonderful husband is treating me to minted lamb chops for dinner whilst I lie on the sofa waiting to be served. The smell of the chops is gorrrrgeous!! I'm going to start dribbling if he doesnt dish it up pretty smart!
It got me thinking about smells i miss from England. The first one I thought of was the lovely smell of wet cut grass. Lets face it you dont see much grass in many parts of Aus let alone wet stuff! Then I thought of tarmac when the road layers are putting a new surface down. For some reason the one and only time I have walked past it here, I didnt really smell of anything much and certainly not like the UK stuff. What smell do you miss? |

Re: Smells
OOOOOooooh what a good idea for a thread
When my in-laws were here in September we went to a local garden centre. Amongst the bush type plants was a lone pink lical bush, with one solitary flower on it. I sniffed it.....and promptly burst into tears!!! I used to have a lovely heavily scented one in my back garden and even though they didn't last long in a vase, I would cut some and have them on my kitchen table. Oh, also the smell of cut grass and damp soggy leaves in a wood. Mmmmm bliss  |
Re: Smells
I will echo Tracey and say lilac and add freesias. You can get freesias here and they smell lovely and they do remind me of home. If I ever go into Crabtree and Evelyn the smell reminds me of my Grans house.
Funny how a smell can evoke memories isn't it. |
Re: Smells
Fresh mown hay and the "country" smell (manure). :p
Violets and mothballs remind me of my grandmother (deceased). I can't tell you what it is, but I think the air in the UK smells completely different from in the US. Maybe just where I am in Texas . . . What do you think? |
Re: Smells
My wife thinks I am odd but I love the small of manure. I think because the only time I smelled i growing up was the once yearly, one week holiday to Rhyll when I was a kid. I guess I associate it with those wonderful times.
The other smell I miss is that of the chippy. A bit lame but that is a world beating scent for me. |
Re: Smells
Oh, another smell I miss is bonfires. Maybe they don't have them any more over there either, but they were definitely part of my life growing up and very nostalgic.
|
Re: Smells
Today it was the smell of a thick carpet of golden damp leaves in the woods, I took my dogs for a walk and they just go mad in the carpet of leaves and the musty smell from the oak leaves is always so nice.

On a side note, it's funny how everyone in the village here is expected to pick up after their dogs (I do, by the way), but there are huge piles of horse dung EVERYWHERE! (there's a riding stable and they lead the horses through the village to the riding paddock every day, leaving trails of the steaming stuff behind them). |

Re: Smells
There was a launderette I used to pass on my way home, and on a cold, drizzly November evening the curious mixture of warmth and washing powder was a smell I loved.
There's something about the smell of an English woodland, no matter what the season; it's rich and earthy......just like none of the men I know! :D |
Re: Smells
Definitely fresh cut grass. Especially when the big mowers at school had just cut the grass. Smelled delicious as we lay down in the grass afterwards.
Also, I remember many walks in the woods. Such great smells, added to that rustling leaves, squirrels, birds etc - it was like a little wonderland when you are younger. From my childhood I remember the strong waft from the kitchen of strawberries, raspberries etc being turned into jam. My mother used to make many, many pots of jam, and that sugary mixture smelled outstanding. Although, I have never liked the taste of jam, the sugary sweet smell always smelled so good:thumbsup::wub: |

Oooh yes, and fireworks. The smell of sulphur in the air, mingled with jacket potatoes and tomato soup, yum :D If I close my eyes I can almost be there :o |
Re: Smells
Freshly cut pine wood... beautiful.
Walking through an English village in the colder months and smelling wood burning on open fires...reminds me of cycle rides and walks in Derbyshire. The smell of roast beef cooking on a Sunday Afternoon, or any other afternoon for that matter. 11 days and counting and we are back......oh yes. |

Re: Smells
Just thought of another one...the smell of bonfires wafting over the garden. Lovely.
Oooh, and the smell of snow. Remember? When it snowed, everything went really quiet and still and when you went out in it it would smell clean and crisp. Or have I completely lost the plot now? I'm sick of being hot and sticky and my make-up sliding off my face and the bloody sweat rash stinging on my neck. I WANT COLD! Only 5 more sleeps and I'll be on that plane to some seriously cold air. Yipppeee! |

OMG! That has come around quickly. I'm dead jealous ... especially being kid free too LOL! I did it last year for a month in May, and it was wonderful. :D I will be really interested in your thoughts on your return.
Two weeks without the kids....heaven! Nah, I'll miss them but I couldn't take them on a rekkie, too much hassle. I will give a full update upon return. |

Yes, we have done our stint in Aus, only 6 months but when you know, you know, if you know what I mean. I'm glad we did it, if only to get it out of our system and it will be a good story to tell the grand kids, (that we don't have yet as our oldest is only 8). Anyway the door bell has just gone, I think it is the nice man from CHESS with some boxes. |

Re: Smells
What a fab thread - out of all the senses smell is in fact the one most closely associated with memory - that's why for example smelling a certain perfume will make you think of a person that wears it.
There's a certain shampoo I used a lot while I lived in Perth - I don't use it very often now but whenever I do it takes me right back to standing in the shower in our rented house in Perth. Weird eh? |
Re: Smells
When I first came over to the UK ten years ago we lived in a pub. It is a silly association but there is a certain type of air freshener used in some pub toilets that takes me right back to those first months in the UK when everything was new and exciting! The taste of a cheese and branston pickle sandwich also takes me back to those days as that was all we could afford to eat!

Re: Smells
I miss the smell of a really old church, when incense has been burning. Also miss the smell of the cold, especially when it's just about to snow. Mostly miss my mum's Sunday roast dinner. :(

Good luck with everything...I do believe in "if you know, you know" as well.....seen lots of people keep trying (us included) and it justs either makes you ill....or sad.... or for some it does come right...don't know many like that though!!(at the moment I am both!!!) are you going back to the same area/home?.......
All the best......take care and the very best of wishes......you lucky so and so..... We are going back to roughly the same area, but like many, we sold our house to come over here, so shall have to start again. Although to be honest i feel quite excited about it, more so than i did when we arrived!! I have spoken to the school and both my girls will start on the 25th Feb, they are so looking forward to it, especially my 4 year old, who, if we had stayed here would only be going 2 days a weeks for the next year, back home she will go straight into full time, however she is more than ready for it!! Can't wait to get back now, just crossing another day off the calendar so we are another day closer. Thanks for all your good luck wishes. |

It's Bakewell Pudding, even though most of us call it a tart; they're very touchy about it. ;) I used to love Bakewell until they moved the market into that horrendous white building with all the pointy bits; yes I knw it's "progress", but IMHO they've spoiled the town. :(

Re: Smells
I remember years ago, I mean we are talking about 30 years, (how time flies), I was at my grandmas house, now sadly departed and there was a certain smell in her kitchen. I never knew what the smell was, but until this day every now and again I'll smell it and in the most obscure places. It's almost as if from time to time she drops in to see how things are going... strange I know.
