I wonder why that happens. Is it perhaps because the transformer wasn't of sufficient capacity? Were they kitchen appliances?

I know nothing about voltage etc. but in my experience the higher the voltage/amps or whatever it's called...the more chance there is of burning out. For example...my daughter bought a pair of dual voltage hair straighteners...the first time she plugged them in in the UK...there was a strong burning smell.

She plugged it into 220/ 240 volts while they were set for 110/120 volts!

Oh my gosh......you just reminded me of my experience in Adelaide, Australia. I had a dual converter for my electric styling brush. Turned it on and whosh......the smell of burning and plug died. Rushed down to reception in fear the hotel would go on fire. She gave me a brand new in packaged converter....same thing. Next day judging 400 dogs and no airbrush??? Well let's say the photos were not the best.
Is there an equivalent mattress in the UK? My brother who has ankylosing spondilitis (serious back probems) has an electric adjustable bed. NHS did not pay for it. He is a civil servant second in charge solicitor.....for EU ISSUES in NI. It's sad he has struggled for 40 years without NHS help.

This is similar to the one we got. Double check the wattage cause I can't remember if we got the 300W one or a little higher.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/240v-120v-St...d_sim_sbs_ce_1

On sale at the mo! Hurrah!!!! I think we only paid £40 at the time so MUCH cheaper than a new bed

Thanks for that. Just bought one and sent to my brother's house in Belfast. He now has dog beds, exercise pens ( for his garden ) as my chihuahuas need to be separate from his Irish setter at least until they get to know each other, puppy pads etc.,
