Default shipping advice

hi there

i had a guy come round today to give us a qoute to (possibly!) move some stuff back to the UK, he estimated half a 20 foot container, i agree thats about right.

i hve asked for two quotes one door to door and another door to port in uk.

he said there will be a fair bit of difference in the price and that door to door is better as it includes everything, clearing at customs etc, and that some people have had to pay a fair bit to clear their stuff at customs (in UK) when collecting at the port.
i know it would be easier to go for door to door, less to worry about and have it done for us but would it be over priced?

does anyone have any experience with collecting from a port? and costs?
thnaks in advance

I don't know about picking up at the UK, sorry. I know we paid around $100 to get our stuff thru' customs in California. It must be similar around the world.
I like your quote...where are you moving from and what company quoted you that? We're moving to the UK this summer from SW USA, probably also half a 20ft container altho' someone's coming to assess quantity today. Personally, I wouldn't fancy renting a truck and picking up at port and doing all the unloading myself, even if I was a big lad (which I'm not ) with some mates! I watched the guys do our stuff just a few months ago and got tired just watching them. Then again it was 40C when we arrived so they were kind of hot.
that price sounds good tho altho' not knowingwhere from makes it hard to judge! I think moving countries is so stressful anyway, get the pros to do the hard work for you!
good luck

Just for general interest, we have been quoted by 3 different companies for a 40ft container door to door Perth to Aberdeen. The difference in price is huge the most expensive being almost $13,000 and the cheapest GRACE £9,000! Guess which one we'll be using?
