Depends on whether you have US citizenship or permanent residence (green card).

AFAIK, if you are a USC, you must continue filing tax returns (as well as other necessary forms, IIRC).

If you are a permanent resident, I think the rules have changed. Used to be you had to continue filing for quite a few years post-return to the UK, but I think that has recently changed.

It's been covered quite extensively before but danged if I could find any of the threads. I'm sure someone with experience and expertise will be along soon t clarify my initial attempts to help. Bottom line is if you are USC or permanent resident, you can't just return and ignore taxes, at least for a while.

There are other issues such as filing for a split tax year and the like, but you may already know that.

See the trouble the London mayor is in. However, I'd suggest a new thread as this is rather off topic.

Cheers

Because it's the law. Search for other threads on the topic. It comes up a lot.

You need to file a tax return, not necessarily PAY tax to the US (though you might need to also do the latter depending on how much you earn and where/how much income tax you pay).

Why don't you start a thread of your own on the topic?

hi

I'm from the UK and have lived in Bermuda for the last two years, as much as i love life here. We can not stay due to visas. I have spent most of my life in Warwickshire which i totally love and would go back to, but unfortunately my husbands work would be central London and i do not want to live there and he does not want to commute. So we shall be opting for where he grew up which is South Africa!. We have also both lived in Zurich, but have to say Warwickshire UK tops it al! Cheaper houses, very good ofsted rated schooling and great for commute. (if your are willing to travel!)
