Default SDLT 2% refund

We complete purchase of a house in the UK on August 26th and will become resident immediately after that. My understanding is that after six months we can claim refund of the additional 2% surcharge.
Has anyone any experience of the refund process - what evidence is required to be produced etc.
Thanks in advance.

We moved to the UK from Canada in January. Completed our house purchase in June. Applied for the refund of the additional 2% stamp duty in August (can’t remember the exact date) and the money was deposited into our account earlier this week. There is an online application to complete and some pretty basic questions and you need to give them the application number assigned to your original payment of the tax - your solicitor will have that.
Very simple, very easy. Have a look online under the gov.uk website. 👍

That is my understanding as well, have no direct experience of which forms to file for the refund, but Loni above had no problems.

Hi there, you only need your UTRN (Unique Transaction Reference Number), your conveyancing solicitor has this.
On-line application...our was refunded within a couple of weeks. Cheers, Tate.

Thanks for the replies.
The HMRC site mentions keeping bank records, utility bills and travel receipts presumably to be able to prove we have actually been living in the UK for six months.
Are all these uploaded with the online application form ?

Thanks for all this information, which confirms what I have read on this forum previously.

I moved back to the UK on 4th April and am due to complete on a property on 27th August, so will be paying the 2% Stamp Duty, which I hope to reclaim after 183 days of being back in the country. This link, which I originally found here, outlines the requirements:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-fo...-tax-surcharge

At time of completing, I will have been back here for 146 days, so will have another 37 days before I can apply, which takes me up to 3rd October. This website is helpful in calculating time periods:
https://www.calendar-12.com/days_between_dates/
If anyone thinks I have misinterpreted the rules, please let me know.

There is talk of more possible changes to Stamp Duty in the budget, so I hope these rules won't change. I will keep you all posted on the process. All of your input has been helpful in knowing about this.

No, I wasn’t required to upload anything. They just wanted the unique number. I assume they will ask for bills, receipts etc. only if they have some reason to wonder about your eligibility or maybe they do random checks.

Cheers

I just received my refunded Stamp Duty. I applied once the 6 month period was up and the refund was received straight into my bank account in just under 3 weeks, which I found pretty impressive. Thanks to all the information and guidance on this site, the whole process was very easy.
