Default Scam? - National Ins. No. application

I have returned to the UK with my US citizen wife. In January she thought she should apply for a N.I. number to make starting a new job easier. She applied online.
I now know that the site she used was not UK government and I am fearful she got suckered in by a scam site masquerading as such.
They have debited her bank account with a charge she agreed to. But we can see no other nefarious activity. But also no NI number has appeared.

I am wondering if anyone actually ever got an honest response from these people :
www.ningov.co.uk

Thanks,
Richard

p.s. I am aware of the correct procedure to apply for NI no.; she wasn't, but now is.

The website isn't a UK government one, and the English used is poor. As you're now aware, there's no charge for a NINO and your wife would be required to attend an interview prior to being issued one. Advise your bank/credit card provider immediately that you've likely been the victim of fraud. I'd also inform the police cyber fraud squad (or whatever they're called in the UK), as someone else now has access to all your wife's personal details, leaving her vulnerable to identity theft.
Edit: Report here https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/re...nd-cyber-crime

There is no fee to apply for a National Insurance Number. Not every UK resident is eligible to apply and receive one. For more information, see here https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number

Definitely free. My son applied online in 2017 and after his interview got his number. I did have to drive him 50 miles to the nearest Jobcentre+ that did the interviews and pay for inner city parking so it did cost us money, but no actual fee.
