Sorry I can't answer your question directly.

However; if you travel back with a route going through North America ie. the USA or Canada, you will be entitled to a much higher luggage allowance (for all classes eg. economy, economy +, business, first) and even in economy you would normally get an allowance of 2 suitcases. I have no idea why all international flights into and out of N. America allow their passengers to have a larger baggage allowance, but they do!

You might want to break your journey back to the UK with a stopover in the States.

Air New Zealand might be worth considering; they fly to the UK via Los Angeles and it's non-stop from LA to London.

Also check with United Airlines. Qantas codeshares with American Airlines.

Depends on what airline you use...usually 20kg a suitcase tops, with two suitcases...excess baggage, with if you catch a bloke at the desk and have a pair, you'll probably get the fee waived, if not, it'll nae be cheap.

I see you are probably flying from Oz...I can only tell you of my own experience from the US. I fly Continental from EWR/MAN they allow 2 suitcases 50lbs ea. They told me that 1lb over and they will charge. Best check with the airline...some will not allow any access weight.

went in person to singapore offices, and had to put it in writing, have been granted 40kg for myself and hubby, wouldnt give us extra for kiddies, but very happy with that! so it CAN ne done! pm me if i can help

Bloody hell thats good! We're with Singapore and up to now have only got the 20k each! Did you have to show them any proof? We might be stuck as we have got return flights booked although we aren't using the return journey!

Which Singapore office did you go to?

brisbane office, dont suppose the managers name will help you though if your in perth and yes we had to show removals documents to verify migration.

we just called in person and asked the lady, she gave managers name and said put it in writing which we did and emailed then bloke, the lady at the office took copies etc.............. a friend of ours tipped us off to do it this way, over the phone the answer was NOOOOOOOOO way!

I'm flying back to UK permanently with singapore airlines and looked into this. I was told I only get 20kgs, but they allow 25kgs without charging extra. I've had to lighten my bags quite a lot and are sending a load back with the boxes.

I weighed my bags and they are currently 24.6kgs! and that's my life in there! how sad is that! thats checked bags, I'm allowed 7 kgs cabin baggage but thats used up too.........in fact I weighed it to 7.4kgs so I'll probably get stitched with a charge or something.

did you try in person with letter back up? we have had email official documents confirming our increased amount now, so it can be done.........suppose its abit late for you now! typical hey

I e-mailed the SIA office here in Adelaide and they said it was only 20kg, I did tell them I was moving back permanently, still got no sympathy....ho hum!

Yeah thats exactly what I was told, 25kg allowed in baggage and 7kg in hand luggage.

Sadly we cant prove that we're going back for good as our stuff is only being shipped back 3 weeks after we leave! (my folks are staying on for 3 weeks longer than us), we also have return flights as we were originally going for a hol. So it looks like we're stuck with the 25kg unfortunately!

Cutlery is no prob in checked-in luggage (in my experience anyway, when bringing my share of granny's cutlery back to Oz)

FWIW; Most airlines from US allow two pieces of luggage each weighing up to 70 lbs (32 KG) per person. I have tried this on Virgin Atlantic and Continental without any problem. They even let you off with 74 lbs each bag without any issues. They do however, not like if you have a heavy carry on.

United Airlines allowes two bad of 50 lbs each. They do not weigh carry-on luggage though.

All these comments are regarding direct flights from Los Angeles or San Francisco to London.
