I hardly buy anything without researching and comparing prices, etc. I can't believe that I was so happy to get my permanent visa that all normal thoughts went out the window. I watched the 'no going back' programme with the family from Essex where they went home because the son had flown back to his girlfriend as soon as they had landed and at the time I couldn't relate to her at all.

I think anyone coming out here should take a real good look at their lives, and if they are not too bad then maybe they should appreciate what they have before uprooting themselves to a place where no one cares who they are.

By the way I love reading your posts and people should know that things are not always perfect here. Maybe you should write about your experiences and start a whole new career. The plastic bucket episode in Bunnings was so surreal it makes me laugh even now.

Thanks kt, The bucket episode still has me baffled and wondering even now whether I have the ability to go invisible without knowing it! Today was my 3rd trip to the sand man so I've got that whole procedure sussed now thank god.

Todays nightmare is a randy male Alpaca but thats another story...

I did exactly the same thing with Canada. One thing however, If you have only been in U.K. 1 year stay here longer. And ask yourself: Whilest you were in US how often did you think of going back to U.K. Like 1 a week or more? And compary it to how often you now think of going there. This should be a good test.

Hmmm, good advice...I will have to remember that one!

The lesson for all of us is that...

t h e r e i s n o p e r f e c t l i f e

Chasing rainbows in an expensive game that we seem to be drawn to.

The trouble with the countries that we tend to emigrate to is that they are too close to what we are moving from, or else their advantages and disadvantages more-or-less cancel each other out, so the scales tend to tip this way then that continually. It's hard to polarise.

I wouldn't say that I am escaping something; however, I always seem to feel the grass is greener somewhere else. As I have travelled alot, and experienced so much I realise there is so much out there - its a point of choosing where! With me, I have recently lived in both USA and UK, so I am well aware of the pros and cons in both countries. The difficult thing is, is that USA offers things that UK does not, and vice versa - so the scales always balance out!

Yup! I lived in the US for 4 years. Decided to come back after 18 months and it took the rest of the time to get things in place to do that. In hindsight I was so focused on returning I didn't then give myself the option of staying which I should have done because I was happy and had a life by the final year.

First year back in the UK I was miserable as anything wishing we hadn't come back, everything seemed much worse about the UK. When we'd been back 9 months I got pregnant and we seriously considered moving back while my green card was still technically valid (hubs is USC). We decided the financial implications would just be too much.

Now, 3+ years later we had the conversation again and I'm honestly in two minds. In fact I joined this site to read people's reasons about returning to the UK to see if I was out of my mind! Sometimes I think I'm whining because I even have the luxury of having an alternative country and thinking that stops me from fully re-integrating into the UK again... plus the fact I'm not as English as I once was!!

:

We would 100% second this. We sold our house, gave up jobs, shipped everything out here, etc to try a new life in Oz................5 mths on we are going back. We did the usual rekki 3 week trip our here, basically a 3 week rekki is nothing but a holiday. It's not until you try and find a job, live, adapt to the new country you truely get a feel for it. Very wise words from YankeemovingAbroad, wish we had of locked the house, with contents inside and come out for 6 mths!! Hindsight eh,

I have that worry too after spending a third of my life here i dont think i will be ever totally english again ,but the only things i have found infuriating in britain always revolve around government departments [tax ,NI etc ].Oh and the banks and building societies when you are asking for a little money to buy a house and they look at you strange when you tell them you have 75% deposit they still want you to go through all the crap for the other 25% dont they realise they can never lose .I must admit i have found in general the ausralian government departments and banks are in most parts helpful and are good to new migrants who want to borrow money as all i had to do was get a letter stating how much i earnt ,no accounts required

I recently realised this too. All the time I've been living here (4 years) I've focused on how different things are here and how difficult it has been to fit in sometimes. Suddenly out of the blue I realised just how much I have become accustomed to living here now, and I do actually like it if I allow myself to. The kids being American in all but citizenship doesn't seem such a big deal either, that's just who they are now, the little English kids who came over here are well and truly in the past now.
We also have a history here, which helps. I know what the seasons will be like, I know how people celebrate Easter or Christmas. When people talk about an event which happened a few years ago, I can remember it too. For me, that adds a sense of belonging.
I'm not sure I could go back to the UK these days. :)

I'm in Oz.

Good advice.

Although I've lived in Oz, I never made it as far as emigrating due to a relationship breakdown.

I spent nearly six years living, breathing and striving towards getting over to Australia permanently. Then all kinds of things fell apart, my priorities changed and my relationship ended. So, no Australia.

But what I realise now is that it wasn't moving to Australia specifically that I needed. It was simply moving. I'd been living in the same place for 12 years, through school then uni then work. With the exception of my stint in Oz, I'd never left East Anglia. I was stuck, needed a fundamental change.

I got that not by moving to the other side of the planet, but by jacking in my job of 5 years and moving north to move in with my new boyfriend. New county, new home, new job, new man and radically new life. It's done me so much good, and I'm so happy, but I only needed to move 150 miles, not several thousand....

:D

Re: Returned - now want to move back!!!

Hi Guys, ive recently moved back from Ottawa, Canada i was over there for just over 6 months and loved it alot, at first it was hard but i was at home after a month. I searched high and low and phoned alot of companies for work as i am electricain but i couldnt find anything and it got quite hard for me to see a living there, then someone from home in the Uk offered me good work and i am now working for myself back in the Uk.

I think about Canada every second of the day and wish i was there still but i have to realise at this point in my life ( im 26 ) that i need to save and get a career and some security in order to have a decent life anywhere, my girlfriend whom ive been with for 4 years is Canadian and she is coming over this may and we are going to settle here for a while.

Hopefully i will return one day when we have some funds and more experience in what we are doing i do feel for everyone whom feels this way its so hard, but i think sometimes you have to prioritise things.

Miss you Canada :(

Ian

I think that wherever you have moved to, you always end up focusing only on the good memories of the place you left, and this makes you want to return.

It could certainly answer alot of questions about our perception of a country while preventing future regrets and having to sacrifice jobs, houses and family and friends. I've always dreamt of living in the UK,maybe so much so that the reality could fall quite short of the dream.I've been told by my english co-workers that England will be a shock for many Americans. It is said that even the small things like customer service is far different in the UK. After a great deal of consideration I have made the decision to spend 6 months in the UK and another two months in Ireland.

Hoping my time in both countries will be enough to full fill my life long dream. If after my travel expedition that desire to live abroad is still strong then its time to take the big step.I think alot of times we visit a place for only a short vacation and conclude what it would be like to live there base on that 2-4 week experience.I believe a 3 month stay in normal circumstances is enough time to tell us everything we need to know about a place.

So when I stay in the UK ,plan to live in a short term apartment with out maid or room service, use mass transit just like the locals do. Will split my time up between two areas,Manchester and outer London. Which ever I like the most the plan is to spend the lion share of time in that place. Same with Ireland,Dublin and will see what other areas I fancy.I must say this plan is due in large part because of all the travel information of the members on this site.It is a big help to learn what to do base on what others have already been through. For that reason if you all were near by I'd have to buy the beer.

It's worth thinking about spending your time in other parts of the Uk and not judging it all by your experiences in Manchester and London. I'm from Northern Ireland and lived for 12 years in Scotland - both very different from each other, but both have lots of good bits.

I have a confession to make - Im a BE lurker, I frequent the site a few times a week but never ever post...I am fascinated by other peoples experiences of what Im doing (been in Melbourne for 8 months now) I think thats cos I find the Australian forum very confronting and argumentative at times, and secretly just like to view - But I am not a pervert!!

Anyway, I digress, I wanted to just say its been refreshing and welcoming to see such a thought provoking thread with positive and negative opinions being respected and acknowledged throughout.

And to be honest, its been great to read that other people feel the same way I have at times. Although Im lucky, on the whole Im very happy here...but I think thats down to us getting our PR Visas and looking on this as a 5 year max 'adventure' we never said we were 'emigrating' far too scary for us, family & friends!!

And Arkon, the bucket incident is one of my favourites too!
