The fact that I'm Australian is irrelevant to that.

So thats 2 people - both born in Australia, both lived away for a long time, both have british schooling qualifications, both have no career history in Australia prior to the move ..... thats a fair comparison wouldnt you say ????????
Anyway

Its like saying there are jobs paying $75,000 a year in Perth, yes there are, in the mines. I think people looking for more run of the mill jobs may well find it harder than yourself.
As an Australian I would personally think being Australian or more especially from WA would be a big help in getting a job there, same as being a queenslander can be an advantage here, also some jobs do require citizenship, even to work in places like Centerlink.
Edit: Congratulations to you on your job anyway

The only fair comparisom would be to someone with similar qualifications to yourself.

I understand & agree with where you are coming from but would like to add that because I have such specialised qualifications and experience, Jobs for me (within my actual field) are few and far between and not just in Perth or even Australia (BTW - I'm not complaining, I'm just commenting it was my choice to come to Perth and I'm very happy I did. ) Consequently I have been applying to jobs for which I have only about 70% relevant experience etc... therefore I have the disadvantage of not being fully qualified for some aspects of the jobs applied for and over qualified in other aspects.
To me I would have thought someone who is qualified / experienced in ALL aspects of the job applied for (even if it is a more "run of the mill" job, whatever that is ) would stand a much better chance of getting an interview, provided they did a good CV & cover letter and as per Australian expections.
As I said in my original post to Dreamaway
..... availability of jobs, its like anywhere and depends on
- the field you are in
- the level of experience and expertise you can offer
- what employers are searching for at that particular moment.

Re: regrets
Oh dear! I think I might have sarted something here.
But thanks anyway for your comments as I will now be aware that I need to be well prepared and must do my research when applying for jobs within Australia particuarly Perth.
I used to be Cabin crew a few years ago and would love to get back into it once settled.I don't quite know what my chances are I have a certificate to prove that I underwent the inital training to obtain my licence to become crew it may help .I will need to go through all the training again I am sure but who knows we shall see.
Cheers Guys.
One last thing my husbands trade is a butcher obviously he has passed the TRA skills assessment but will he need to obtain a licence once in Australia so that he can apply for positions in this area? If anyone knows It would be much appreciated.
Maybe not the right place for this tread on the returning to UK forum.Oh Well.
Hope I don't upset anyone.

just spotted this, and I've got The West beside me.
13 ads for butchers (a few apprentices though).
None say anything about licenses.

Re: regrets
difference between a brit style cv and an aussie cv ?
my experience was oz cv's are padded to the hilt and would be disregarded in the uk as too verbose. my experience in oz as a recruiter was that this style of cv was'nt appreciated and it is'nt necessarily the best advice to follow the herd.
brits are valued in oz for our work ethic and level of skill and training and therefore a brit cv (i.e. shorter and to the point) will often make you stand out from the crowd.

I have applied for 4 jobs in total, had 3 interview offers and 1 rejection and been offered all 3 jobs I was interviewed for.
Same city yet 2 completely different experiences for Janey & I. Which one is more normal ? I have no idea but would hazard a guess they are equally common depending who you speak to.

I have not worked for a while as I am bringing up my family, but have loads of experience .
Here in Nottingham I have never had trouble getting a job and still remain fairly confident if I was to go back into employment in Notts but after some of the threads I have read it does worry me I have to say.
We are heading off to Perth next year firstly to take a good look around to see if it is really going to be for us.We will then come home and make some hard decisions.Until then I am gathering as much info as possible good or bad and I have to say after reading many comments from people coming home it is making me rather more cautious.
I must just ask now that you are home are you enjoying the shopping in Nottingham?.We are lucky as we do have some really good shops here.

I know there are lots of horrid places in the UK and Notts has lots of them but I love being back.
I now work for the City Council, although before going to OZ I only worked part time, this job is full time. I love it, after 16 months of being out of work in Perth it's brilliant being back in the hub of things. Shopping in town is a dream compared to the 'cheap and tackyness' of the shops in Perth. There all a bit like Tradex, ok if you want something cheap but if you want something more expensive you have to get a loan out to buy it.
You have to have a certificate for most positions that are advertised..coffee maker in a cafe..shop assistant..cleaner.. electrician...plumber...etc etc etc.
I will send you a private message with my email address on if you want to tall more about Perth. Don't worry I won't dampen your dreams, and if you're anything like I was before I left to go to Oz, you won't listen anyway!!!! lol
