I sometimes sign online petitions, mainly about animal care issues. Today I received an email saying 'Thank You for joining the Liberal Democrats' claiming I had signed up to the 'Stay' campaign for the EU Referendum.

I did not sign this campaign! My husband has had emails claiming he is supporting the In Campaign too (he isn't).

The only phone number I can find for Care2Petitions is an American phone number. I'm going to phone them tonight because I'm very concerned that my name has been fraudulently attached to a petition I did not sign.

I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else, or if anyone has a UK phone number (I can't find one).

My apologies, my original post cast doubt on whether this petition exists, but now I've found it: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/609/874/713/

I'm a bit surprised if signing it is taken as having joined the Lib-Dems; normally you aren't treated as a member of a party unless you've paid them money.

It also seems a bit pointless starting a petition, when there is going to be a referendum in a few weeks. I can't see what it could possibly achieve. And it is even odder to sign it with a false name.

I'd ignore it.

Thanks for your reply. Tried phoning them on the US number last night. All options chosen lead to a recorded message to leave your number and they will call you back. I didn't bother as I'm sure they aren't going to call back the UK. Which means it's a bit ridiculous that they get involved in UK-specific petitions if Brits can't contact them.
