I have a bank account in the UK. It's advisable to keep at least one account and CC.

In my case I have two pensions I receive in the UK paid into it.

Others may have business in the UK they receive payment from, such as property rental.

Also it is very handy for buying things in the UK, with a UK credit card and paying that in sterling from a UK account. I buy my sons birthday presents etc online and have them delivered to their UK addresses. Avoids huge postage costs from the US.

could it have been my "normal state of confusion"?

I understand the use of a UK account, I have one myself, I was confused why a non uk resident would "need one" I got confused by the non resident, was thinking American wanting UK account, but I think I am straight now (actually sure I am "straight" but think I understand now)
